FYI..

The Free Press story states that there are still future plans to develop a (6 - 8 floor) 5 star hotel on the middle pad. However, the REIT isn't allowed to own hotels so it would likely be done by a different developer.

Anyone else see the comments on the WFP or CBC articles, or the Facebook reposts? I was astonished to see the number of posters who thought this money should be going to the poor and needy! We need a complete shift of discourse in Winnipeg away from "what can government do for me?" These are private corporations and individuals investing hundreds of millions of dollars in our city. If you are low-income, try getting into a trade that will benefit for the next five years from all of this construction activity! The fact that some Winnipegers believe that private enterprise owes them anything more than tax dollars is astonishing.

The part of the skywalk that connects to the staircase at the back of the Winnipeg Square is being left untouched by the looks of it. Hopefully it will be integrated into the possible future hotel.

Thank goodness I don't pay for the freep and get my articles another way. The comments on there are so stupid. It's insane. Yeah, let's make a private company build a homeless shelter instead of a profitable business. Rightt haha

"Why is the government spending so much money on something we don't need? All that money needs to go to the roads first!"

"Why is this company spending so much money on something nobody will live in? All that money needs to go to the homeless first!"

The majority of the people saying those statements in this city needs a slap in the face. Nobody is giving out handouts, whether it's private investment firms like Artis REIT, or any of our governments.

You want something done? Do it yourself! They're the sole reason why this city is being held back for so long.

The audacity of these people.

I don't think you can read too much into the specifics of the skywalks or other connections from the renders. These renders were produced in China and are created to showcase the main stars of the show, the buildings. I would have to believe that all of the little things will be looked at.

Accuracy isn't paramount, especially when you consider they added mountains in the background.

I hate reading the comments on either papers. It's full of people that just want to leach of the city and private enterprises. They have zero intentions of getting the fuck out and getting a job.
We make it way to easy to be unemployed here. Time to adopt an American system. Drug tests for everyone that gets a cheque. Fail you get a greyhound ticket out of the province. I think Alberta was doing it this way once or still is.

Anyway back to the topic.
From the many photos I have seen it looks like the podium actually does go as far back as the skywalk. But it does look from many angles that is wouldn't. So I am guessing it's just that it looks like it. If you google earth the site you can see the place where the tower would go and match it up with the artists rendering and it does go to the skywalk.

Totally agree on the drug tests. Shipping people out of province is kind of silly. Saskatchewan recently bought two guys one way bus tickets to BC. Sort of stirred up controversy how one province is dumping their shit on another province. We would all just be shipping each others scum back and forth forever.

If we start drug testing, at first people will be huge failures. Probably leaching off homeless shelters. But after a while people with either wake up or die basically.

Why should they not be accountable? Bleeding hearts are helping nobody in the long run.

I truly hope whoever owns 200 Portage will refresh its exterior. Even if it contrasts to 360 Main, that would be great.

I guess for so long everything that happened in Manitoba involved public dollars that everyone felt entitled to say NO it should be done THIS way. The idea of a private development with private dollars that involves strictly private transactions between a landlord and its tenants and doesn't involve public dollars or opinions at all is still a bit of a foreign concept around here.
