That's a totally different queen picture than the two ones I am familiar with. I don't recall them mentioning a third one in that historical article on the queen pictures that recently ran in the Free Press.

Says the first painting was in the arena from 55-79 which the summit series photo clearly contradicts.

Weird thing is, in that blog post he also links a u of m archive photo from that appears to have the same Queen picture as the summit series. I believe that's the opening of the Winnipeg Arena.

Seems to me there were 3 paintings. One from the arena opening til at least 72. A second for a period in the 70's and then a third when the arena expanded

^ Yeah, the one at the top of your post looks like it's the "in between" portrait, she clearly looks older than in the original one which was apparently still there in 1972.

I only have memories of the 1979 one which lasted until about 1999 or so... the Moose did some stunt where they put Moose antlers on the portrait for April Fools Day in 1997 I think, and I seem to recall that the portrait came down soon after that IIRC around the Pan Am Games. So the Arena was without a Queen portrait for about the last 5 years or so.

On an unrelated note, does anyone know anything about the history of the docks on the Red at the foot of Pioneer?

I was walking around the remnants this past fall and they must have been a large operation at one point, taking up a couple hundred feet of riverbank space, bigger than the Alexander Docks. I've found nothing about them, however, except the photo from the link below that shows the remnants in the late '50s after they had been abandoned.

This is similar to what's left now, except the pieces of wood that make up the 'wall' you see in the photo have rotted significantly. There's tons of broken china and other stuff scattered about and some large ash piles embedded in the bank.

For your reference, on the left in the background, you can see a billboard intended for viewing by drivers approaching the Provencher Bridge. Also, in between the riverbank and the buildings/hydro poles, is that the walled pedestrian path that is still there today?

there used to be a rai bridge that cross the river around there proilly left over from that also there was a coal plant where the stadium is now

The original rail right-a-way came off the CN line that went through the old St. Boniface Station at Provencher, continued North to Thibault St. to the end of St. Jean Baptiste, where it then joined Aubert Street, west to St Joseph, where it took off in a curve Southward towards Tache and Laverendrye, and then across the river to where Thistle Lane ended at the Red River. The only portion of that track that remains today, is the part where it curves south along the trees (which mark the rail bed) between St.Joseph and Tache, behind the condos.

also that tank farm is there on wall that was riped out when i was in highschool and the office buoilding torn down a few yrs back sadly

Yeah, wow. Very interesting. I would have expected this area to be a little more developed by that point in time, at least all the way out to Empress.

this picture is crazy. For a time before the trizac development - that area was a surface parking lot! I had no idea. I figured they tore down the buildings and got started the new construction immediately.
