I wonder what impact, if any, this will have in UCity:

Microsoft Innovation Center to open at 3711 Market

Microsoft Corp. is opening a 3,8000-square-foot outreach center in University City, its first such facility in the Philadelphia area and its third nationwide, the Redmond, Wash.-based tech giant said in a release on Monday.

The Microsoft Innovation Center will open this summer at the 3711 Market St. headquarters building of the University City Science Center business incubator and research hub, according to the release.

The Microsoft facility will offer opportunities for entrepreneurs, students and community members to use and receive training in the company's tools and technology, Science Center spokeswoman Kristen Fitch said. Microsoft operates similar centers in Atlanta and Miami.

What a shame it looks like the Port Authority is taking over the Far East end...

Unless we want to stagnate and decline as a seaport, I don't agree. The Navy Yard covers an area the size of Center City, so there's plenty of room for a variety of uses.

+1

A lot of people don't realize this, but there's a low clearance at the Walt Whitman Bridge. Bulk freighters carrying Chilean cocoa and produce have no problem passing under it, but container ships do. That's why the main container port is allll the way down there.

There actually isn't that much room for Philly to expand its port facilities. I suppose you could stick a ro-ro terminal over by the Airport, but container terminals have these big cranes which become big FAA no-nos the closer to the airport you get.

Right. I remember the big QE2 (liner) visit in the 80s. It had to dock this far south since it couldn't clear the WWB.

This is a fool's errand I'm sure, but here goes.
I have a friend who works at Driscoll, and he was telling me how busy they are right now. Specifically he mentioned the CITC, the new Penn hospital building, and a third project that he could not give specifics about, but that it is another billion dollar project like the other two. He said it is a developer project, as opposed to institutional. Does anyone know what that could be? And please notice the question, does anyone *know* what it is, not looking for speculation or wish lists (hence the fool's errand.)

Skyscraper: the third project that your friend couldn't give specifics on. Was that because he didn't know the specifics or that it's hush hush and hasn't been publicly released yet? I'm guessing it's the latter but in case it's the former, maybe UC Square?

It's hush hush. He knows the specifics but was not allowed to talk about them

Thought this news was interesting in context with the discussion that was happening here a couple of weeks ago.

PayPal Withdraws Plan for Charlotte Expansion

https://www.paypal.com/stories/us/paypal-withdraws-plan-for-charlotte-expansion

Quote:
Two weeks ago, PayPal announced plans to open a new global operations center in Charlotte and employ over 400 people in skilled jobs. In the short time since then, legislation has been abruptly enacted by the State of North Carolina that invalidates protections of the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender citizens and denies these members of our community equal rights under the law.

The new law perpetuates discrimination and it violates the values and principles that are at the core of PayPal’s mission and culture. As a result, PayPal will not move forward with our planned expansion into Charlotte.

I’m not helping by stating this and I was avoiding mentioning it but I’ve heard rumors from construction folks that the start of the third Comcast tower at 19th and Arch could be imminent.

Those are the Parkway Corp. mixed-use lowrises. There are some recent photos on the general developments thread.

that's what I am speculating, but would like to know for sure, as I'm sure everyone on this board would. I have a slightly more specific reason for wanting to know though, that's why I was asking for the speculation to be kept out.

Short of the equivalent of Dustin.Downey or Blenfest weighing in, speculation is all we're going to get.

I realize, that's why I qualified the request by acknowledging it was a fool's errand, but thought it would be worth a try.
Anyone can feel free to pm me if you have info you want to share privately. Promise I'll keep it between us.

Wouldn't they need a zoning bill passed first?
