and the namesake of the street itself lol

it'll probably get retrofitted into condos in the end anyway....

I do not see it adding much to the area.

Other than a place for people to worship every week, get married, baptize their children, hold funerals, stage functions, send their kids to Sunday School, play in the gym...

That place is packed every Sunday, standing room only. One of the few places downtown that can make that claim, unless perhaps the Jets are playing. It's not going anywhere.

TNS Square Update: Cam Capture
______________

_______________

Quick explanation of link only to Older SSP post:

I just realized the Image URL I posted last page was the photo that would be updated.(Cam capture) Hence every time the photo is updated it will change, meaning we could have 50 photos in this thread that are exactly alike! SO..I'm just adding the link to a photo that will always change..

Catholic churches tend to have extremely good protection even without heritage status. Basically money is almost never a strong enough motivator to free a property from the Church. They also have a detailed financial system in place to help fund less profitable places with funds from elsewhere.

Effectively, with the status as the principal cathedral for most of Manitoba that church is not moving off that site, ever.

Right now the Chancery for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Winnipeg is located out on Pembina Highway. Total daydreaming here, but I'd love to see it come downtown. The Archdiocese could team up with Longboat to develop the site next to the Cathedral... perhaps an office building with a few floors set aside for administrative/educational/charitable purposes, with the rest up for lease at market rates. It could give TNS a nice little boost by adding one more building to the complex. And there are plenty of precedents for this sort of thing in bigger cities, where charities and religious organizations support themselves by developing their land in high-value districts.

The Chipmans are fairly well known supporters of Catholic causes, so it's not entirely farfetched to think they'd work together with the church on such a project

Yeah, good point... I remember some 10 years ago there were renderings posted here of a proposed tower planned for that site.

The main commercial tower is already partly leased, to heavyweight tenants Scotiabank and Winnipeg law firm Thompson Dorfman Sweatman. (True North Sports and Entertainment)
So if Scotiabank opens at TNS are they then abanoning 360 Main St. like Thompson-Dorfman-Sweatman are to 201 Portage Ave.?

I believe it's already been said that they'll occupy both locations.

And somewhere in here I was reading speculation on what restaurant might go into the Sutton Hotel?

Nearby is Boston Pizza in Eaton Pl./Cityplace and in the arena itself is Moxie's. Never been into the downtown Moxie's but I love the ambience of the one at Polo Park.

Wondering if TN would consider moving Moxie's out to their new development? But then the question is, what would go in Moxie's current location?

I will reiterate: Cityplace would look fantastic with windows wrapped around the second floor.

I suspect it will be one of their other brands, perhaps a Chop.
