I get edmontns attachment to the thing but lets be honest the city has kept enough of these 100 year old buildings afloa in the DT. level it and move on and if they must keep it at least redo the outside. Looks detriot as hell

I think you might need a eye exam. Its a great building that went through a massive restoration inside and out. (Its in the warehouse district!!!)

There are no derelict buildings in this area. This reminds you of Detroit...wow!

The thing is, even if you don't like the look of it, in terms of interest in activity this building in it its current form is probably contributing more to downtown Edmonton than any demolition and redevelopment would. In fact having this close to the arena stuff will probably help add some interest and variety to all of the new and shiny for you one block east.

Yup, sorry Oilkountry but you are totally out to lunch on that statement. That building (Mercer Warehouse) has been beautifully restored and now houses a great pub, one of the cities best restaurants (Rostizado), a Transcend Coffee, a great startup space, and more.

And that's to say nothing about how much of our architectural heritage we've already demolished in the last 30 years. It has to stop, we have so little left.

It's about valuing architectural diversity (without resorting to guady faux-historicism) and the diversity provided by having buildings of mixed-age (i.e. mixed incomes). It's Urban Planning 101.

Inside and out? wow they sure did a great job on the exterior.

Oh please you people sound ridiculous the place could easily be mistaken as an abandoned building to anyone that doesn't know what it is. I get this is a new age "feel good hipster way of thinking" but This is one of many projects like this in Edmonton, multiple 100 year old warehouses converted to restaurants ect in DT. I live in Edmonton and I drive by this heep all the time. Think about an out of towner driving by this beautiful arena with glass skyscrapers all around it and seeing this run down building. it needs an overhaul, I get the history.... Jesus you guys are so sensitive lately. One cant even have a personal opinion any more

If/when they decide to clean or cover up the brick with the faded lettering, the building will look great (it still looks pretty good now). You don't just tear down something like that - it's got character and looks good in any area. If I passed by it, it wouldn't give me the impression of an abandoned building at all. I've seen abandoned buildings - they don't look like that.

Cities need more buildings like that.

Would it not have made more sense to call it Rogers SkyDome? You still have your corporate name attached to an iconic name that most people know about.

If they called it Rogers SkyDome, it would have continued to be referred to as "the SkyDome". That's why arenas these days are usually called "centres" and football stadiums are often "fields" - the use of those designations makes it harder to leave out the sponsor's name, since "the Centre" and "the Field" aren't idiomatic short forms in the way that "the Arena" and "the Stadium" are.

The Jay's preseason game has once again stirred discussion of MLB's return to Montreal (like clockwork) and I had a question. What would the feasibility/cost be of chopping off the end of the big O and turning it into an open-air baseball park? Normally I think such a project would be pretty doable, but given the Stade Olympique's unique construction (and reportedly hefty demolition costs) would it be cheaper/easier to build a new park, or downsize/retrofit the white elephant?

EDIT: If nothing else, it would probably bode well for the stadium's long-term viability by getting rid of that money-pit of a roof

Why would they even use the big O. They can build a new park for less than renovating the big O and not be constrained by its existing layout.

One of the media articles about the preseason series in Montreal mused about that city getting a AAA team... given the apparent appetite for baseball in that city, you'd think someone would plunk a IL team into the Big O. Make a few bucks and assuming that fans show up in respectable numbers, you build the case for a MLB team.

This approach worked well for a couple of cities... Baltimore got the NFL back that way (after the CFL took off there), and the NHL might not have come back to Winnipeg had the IHL/AHL Moose not enabled True North to evolve into a NHL-calibre organization.

Without a doubt though, a MLB team in Montreal would require a new facility.
