Correct. The design as shown is more or less a massing/materials concept. Definitely not the final design.

LOL, you need to look up what the word timeless means. Its not, Oh cool another weird collection of boxes circa the twentyteens.

I guess enigmatic might apply, in the sense of: WTF were they thinking.

I posted the renderings for the project on a foreign website, and they love it.
They think its a "masterpiece" for Vancouver filled with "bland, boxy-blue buildings" and "lowrises". So everything's good.

Don't tell me - this is revenge for the Eiffel Tower, isn't it?

Yup, when all the wooden "hoarding" actually comes off this "building under construction"

I gotta say I too agree with what BC Phil had to say, that the top box should be decapitated. As for the wood panelling, the whole structure will also look nicer if the vertical wooden panels are replaced by wide-slab cream/beige ceramic cladding with vertical LED lights, but wood at the underbelly. It also makes sense for our wet west coast weather to have a building like that.

Vertical LED lights? Are you somebodies alter ego? You can't be for real.

What's wrong with LED lights? You speak as if I'm planning to bomb a building. Please stop the hyperbole.

Lack of federal funding could further delay Vancouver Art Gallery's new home

http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2016/03/vancouver-art-gallery-federal-funding/

Quote:
"While it did not receive any funding this round, the museum could see its much-needed federal windfall in the next budget, which starts in 2021. Trudeau’s ministers have previously stated that the first budget would only consider shovel-ready projects.

But with steep provincial and private funding gaps, the Gallery’s new home is far from being shovel ready."

According to Vancitybuzz there is only one budget every 5 years? What planet do their writers come from?

So there are more chances for federal funding? The other two levels of gov't likely won't provide the money for this.

Well a budget doesn't say fiscal year 2016 only. Look at all the five year, three year commitments. Just blame it on lazy Vancitybuzz's laziness.

Logan's got a point - we're talking about an art gallery, not certain hotels or casinos in America.

Good. Vancouver has really got to push the wood thing.
We don't have the height..This isn't a design-centered city either.

What we do have is the nature-loving image and a general acceptance that its a city before the mountains and deep forests.
We need to reinforce the ski-resort feel with wood and aboriginal architecture.
Lets work on that.

Praying that this was an April Fool's joke.

Everything in this town seems to be about the restriction of design ideas and thoughts. Going tall means Dubai, having malls means China, and lighting with LED lights means Vegas hotels & casinos in America. Now I know why designers face uphill challenges in this town.

Well, like Christmas said, let's just stick with the resort town feel and aboriginal architecture. That would really placate and appease the masses.

By all means, build that ugly stack of wooden boxes, and it can look dark and forlorn without any lighting.

Since "subtle" isn't working for you - we're both suggesting that you want a Trump building. Concrete instead of wood, definitely, but vertical LED strips would look completely tacky on an art gallery - best to use flood lights or spot lights.

Well, if that was serious, then you must absolutely slay them when you're joking, because I'm already laughing.

If you want a "ski resort feel" with wood and aboriginal architecture, I rather suggest you do it upcountry: Trail, Rossland, Salmon Arm, Revelstoke .... this is Vancouver, a metro of 2.5 m.
