^ Very cool, but needs a soundtrack.

Also feels like it might have been better when some construction activity was on, otherwise it just feels kinda abandoned.

Renovations to Edmonton tower will complete makeover of downtown corner

BILL MAH
More from Bill Mah
Published on: March 30, 2016

When Procura finishes renovating its newly renamed WSP Place building at 109 Street and Jasper Avenue, the company will have significantly changed the look of the key downtown intersection.

The developer has started major improvements on the former Associated Engineering building, which includes recladding the building’s concrete edifice with aluminum and a triple-pane window wall system, new heating and ventilation, tenant space improvements and green additions, such as a natural-gas fired cogeneration plant to target high LEED environmental standards.

No cost estimate was released.

Chandos Construction is the general contractor and Manasc Issac is the architecture firm on the project.

“I believe we have to look 10 or 20 years ahead,” Procura president and CEO George Schluessel said Wednesday. “In general, Edmonton has many older B- and C-class buildings that are very inefficient, they don’t have the air quality and they’re not in keeping with today’s modern standards expected by tenants, and some of these will be repurposed or renovated.”

When renovations are done in December, WSP Place will complete a hat-trick of newly built or significantly upgraded properties on three corners of Jasper and 109 Street, in each case replacing buildings considered aging and less attractive.

Driving by yesterday I see that the mixed use loft condo project on 111th ave & 90th St is finally underway. This is going to be a very nice addition.

Red Brick's Parkdale apartments is almost at lock-up. Happy for the development but we're most definitely not getting what the renders supposed

Paula Simons: MacEwan's new arts centre charms its way into heart of Edmonton

PAULA SIMONS, EDMONTON JOURNAL
More from Paula Simons, Edmonton Journal
Published on: March 30, 2016

On the fifth floor of MacEwan University’s new Centre for the Arts and Culture, construction workers, tethered by safety lines, wrestle a giant pane of glass into position. The window is just over two metres high, and about 1-1/2 metres wide. Under the deep blue sky, the glass glints in the bright March sunlight. It’s a risky and beautiful manoeuvre, part performance art, part aerial dance — a fitting metaphor for MacEwan’s work-in-progress.

The $180-million project on 104th Avenue at 111 Street heralds a new age for MacEwan. The building will allow the university to close its west-end satellite campus and consolidate all of its students downtown, giving the university important critical mass. The striking building, designed by world-renowned Vancouver architect Bing Thom, in collaboration with the Edmonton firm Manasc Isaac, will allow the university to expand its visual arts, design, dance, music and theatre diploma programs into four-year degrees. And its theatres, art gallery and restaurant will make it a key lynchpin in the 104th Street arts and entertainment corridor, from the Brewery District in the west, past the arena district, to the Royal Alberta Museum in the east.

“It’s a building worthy of downtown Edmonton,” said MacEwan president David Atkinson. “This is not a building with a moat around it. It has an open door on the city.”

But while construction is proceeding nicely — the building, set to open in September 2017, is more than half-finished — the project still faces a $30-million shortfall. MacEwan received a $30-million grant from the province. It raised $120 million from the sale of its Jasper Place and Mill Woods campuses, and from its endowments. Now, it needs to raise the final $30 million from donors — not easy in a world of collapsed oil prices.

If only it looked anything like the render, with it's silvery finish. Instead, at the moment it looks more like Commerce Place's office tower.

See the layman like me would have no idea it's behind schedule. Everytime I drive by it it seems to be going up like wildfire.

It impacts the skyline quite a bit too when coming into the city from the east.

Overall I think the actual progress has been steady and as expected. I think that the reason they are behind schedule is not because the project was delayed but and unrealistic turnover date was given right at the onset
