There is?

Or is this a joke I'm missing because everything looks very clean.

Celebrating Edmonton Oilers legacy at Rexall Place

Everyone is invited to join in a fan celebration before the Edmonton Oilers play their last game in Rexall Place. Wear your orange and blue and join Mayor Don Iveson and members of the Edmonton Oilers alumni as we thank the team for the many memories they have given our city during their years at Rexall Place.

Date: Wednesday, April 6, 2016
Time: 12:15-12:45pm
Location: Sir Winston Churchill Square

Fans can see alumni players spanning the team’s history and hear a couple players share their
memories thank the fans for their support.

This event will cause temporary lane closures around Churchill Square.

We’re hoping to have a great crowd as we have over 190 returning alumni and staff – including Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Grant Fuhr, Glenn Anderson, Jari Kurri, Ryan Smyth and Bill Ranford to name a few. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see Oilers favourites from every era of the team.

Mine will be tonight. Public skate on the ice. Ignoring the Oilers current performance and embracing the memories.

I gave my tickets away for Saturday's game. Lucky for me.

Hope they don't have another stinker on Wednesday.

READY TO CREATE NEW MEMORIES
April 5, 2016
By Kelli Gustafson – RogersPlace.com

As the Oilers prepare to say farewell to Rexall Place on Wednesday, April 6, they were given a chance to see inside Rogers Place earlier this week.

“It’s crazy how far it’s come along,” remarked defenceman Darnell Nurse as he joined the tour through Rogers Place on Monday, April 4.

It has been just over a year since the Oilers last set foot in Rogers Place, revealing to them yet another glimpse of the team’s future home.

The last time the team toured Rogers Place, only a steel framework laid in place. Now, with electrical and drywall installed, the players did not have to rely as heavily on their imaginations when envisioning where they would be spending next season.

“(Rogers Place) is going to be a great common grounds for everyone to meet before games, after games, come here for concerts…” observed Matt Hendricks.

Hendricks brought his father, Doug, along for the tour, adding, “He’s the biggest reason I’m at the stage of hockey that I’m at, so I wanted him to be able to enjoy this with me today.”

And to think the Winter Garden is smaller than originally planned.

Yowzer, tis still huge.

Wait, is that the sound of teeth being gnashed at Flames HQ?

Really nice write-up of Edmonton's history of arenas: Thistle, Gardens, Omniplex and Coliseum.

Well the boys came out with a win tonight in the old barn. It will be exciting to see them play in the new facility. I am really looking forward to it...mostly because my office is a block and a half away.

I'm very intrigued as to how crowd noise will be in the new building. Apparently some of the newer buildings around the league feel a little stale and cavernous as the sound doesn't bounce as much. Hope that (lately rare...) deafening Rexall roar remains at Rogers.

They history of the Coliseum was a lot more interesting that I thought it would be. Kind of amusing that a few fans had to bolt down their own seats on opening night just to be ready in time. That would be fun in some ways and really give the fans a sense of ownership of the facility. Too bad you would NEVER see that today.

The Oilers video walkthrough is starting to show just how spectacular this facility is going to be. OTOH, it also shows how the community rink has been cut back to the point where it no longer looks like it belongs with the rest of the building. I hope that the city at least operates this rink with the general public in mind: lots of public skate time and the ability to rent skates and other equipment right on site.
