Sweet! I'm not excited about the design which looks pretty solid but the fact they'll be getting rid of relatively new Big Box stores for a more urban structure is great news.

Is this the spot?

The ALT Hotel/Condo was announced two months back and construction will begin on it this year:

That is great, it will extend the skyline westward!

Nice looking ALT hotel there. Typical Montreal architect firm / company, always keeping their better designs for cities NOT Montreal. Our Alts here are shite.

Dont worry, you're not alone. It's the same deal with Toronto and the Four Seasons.

Regardless of whether you like the minimalist hotel design, the fountain has no freakin water and the developer was too cheap to put up an illuminated sign on the fins.

The fountain is definitely a strange one but, an illuminated sign?!? I know this is Toronto and every building has to have a freaking sign as a crown but, this is one area I'm extremely happy they "cheaped out" on. There are crappier Four Seasons than the one in Toronto. I think the Toronto location is the only one or one of very few owned by the corporation.

Overall, I like the design of the the podium but why does every new condo have to have a double ceiling height ground level? More often than not, they feel cold and sterile.

Double ceiling heights are more attractive for retail or restaurant tenants I would assume. Also it's keeping in line with the warehouse structures across the street that have high ceiling heights.

Better too high than too low. Cold and sterile would be the responsibility of the tenants.

Not much yet, but there is apparently a 40 story apartment tower proposed for Portage and Main:

Good news for Winnipeg. It's a cool spot (Portage is one of my favourite streets in Canada).

Exciting news for Winnipeg!
I get the impression from reading the article that this will move forward much faster that SkyCity.

Another exciting aspect is that at 40 storeys, it should be one of the 5 tallest in the city, and will certainly be the tallest residential tower between Edmonton and Toronto!

Sounds good. Hopefully it meets the sidewalk well. I get a Mississauga City Centre vibe around that intersection. The reclad sounds good too. The metal spandrel looked awful the last time I drove through there. Of course, paint would have work on the aesthetic front too.

Geographically, Hamilton is "between" Toronto and Winnipeg... and Hamilton has a 43 floor residential tower...

They might get a bit taller with roof elements and ceiling heights though.
