Why not a brick podium design that compliments the towers above? Every city has these neighbourhoods. It's the ones that don't restrict the designers to faux heritage that ultimately turn out much nicer.

I dunno. I like it the way it is. Preliminary rendering anyway. Will see if this even gets built. Alldritt might be just rezoning and flipping this.

Figured I'd put this here as it is a supposedly "legitimate" proposal...

Funny thing is that this is a proposal for a neighbourhood west of downtown, well outside the "Urban Warehouse" district that requires such things. In other words, there's literally no good reason for it.

The only negative I can find with this is the podium. It feels a little sterile.

^^Yeah, I couldn't figure that out either. Wasn't this the site of the deceased Playa del Edmonton?

The podium to me looks like suburban strip mall big box facade-ism.

Yep. No need for a podium here.

Not sure, but the last business to occupy that corner was a fairly-beloved-but-before-my-time Blue Chicago. Here's the site in Street View:

^Thanks. So it is actually kitty-corner to Playa. What is the status of Playa anyway?

^ Oh now I know what you're talking about, haha.

Yeah that one is dead, a new developer has stepped in and is building something a little better called West Block:

Yes the brick podium of the Aldritt proposal is wrong for that site, However there is a mish mash of styles in that area now. Brick just happens to be on a few of the retail sites. It should at least have similar podium style as the West Block.

This is quite a high profile intersection so it would be nice to see some attractive on this corner. I am of the same opinion that Aldritt will not build this but flip it. They have been buying up the residential in that area.

That Aldritt podium is awful. Take heed from Calgary's ill-advised 'warehouse district' podiums of the early-mid 00's.

How the hell does Saskatoon get a nicer Alt hotel than what Calgary's getting in the East Village?

Saskatoon has some good architecture. The newer movie theatre downtown is pretty spiffy.

Toronto's Alt hotel is out by the airport, to be fair. I'm amazed they haven't announced a downtown project yet given the rate they seem to be expanding.
