Yeah, the design is very lazy. What I wish is that this modernist phase in architecture would just end and we'd go back to building grand classicist buildings, especially for important civic structures such as art galleries and museums.
Just plain ugliness. This will be the worst-looking building in the entire country.

Modernism isn't really the problem - the problem is mediocre architects trying to make the building "original" and "iconic," and failing miserably.
Somehow it neither seems large enough, nor looks like an art gallery. Case closed.

I think in the renders it looks smaller than it actually is, I believe that the square footage is fairly substantial.
Anyways, I am with those who like the building and design and I am glad it doesn't look like a Guggenheim Bilbao knock-off, a Gehry-esque me too design.

I don't think it is substantially larger than the current building. I think 25% bigger without actually checking.
But if they are going to spend boat loads of money for a building on free land for the sole purpose of needing more space, I would expect WAY more space.

I just think that it's hypocritical of the VAG to extol the injustice of them only being able to display X% of their collection in their current premises, which they deride as being far too small, then they turn around and put forward a design that only offers a marginal increase in floor area (granted, I'm sure, with far greater space efficiency) without any visible opportunity to expand over time in phases. I'm not a fan of this design at all.

Not sure, but classicist architecture can easily be blended with "native" forms and motifs. Take for example these from British India:
Yes. True enough. But in these buildings the classical element over-rides, and is dominant to, the native culture. The bamboo box proposed for the VAG is fine in context: in an East Asian city maybe, or even Upcoast BC. Really. But not in downtown Vancouver... please.

Actually, I was surprised that no totem poles were used in the design given VAG's love affair with Emily Carr and the general West Coast Native culture.
