Fair enough, consider yourself engaged in future, with all barrels

Just remember not everyone you insult as having a stereotypical western view (in your mind) is from the west (or has that view).

I agree with your sentiment and Floro but I wouldn't say that this is the best team since 86 (far from it). But they are a sound, well coached and disciplined side and i think that is what you need to qualify in this region. This team doesn't have the talent level of some we have in the past but they make up for it in their defensive (not bunkering) discipline and to me that is even more important.

It's all relative,

Australia's medal count at the 1984 Summer Olympics (before they began their campaign to secure the Sydney Olympics): 24

Canada's medal count at the 1984 Summer Olympics: 44

------------Sydney 2000-------------

Australia at the 2012 Summer Olympics: 35

Canada at the 2012 Summer Olympics: 18

And FrankieFlowerpot,
Care to provide some evidence? FC Porto and the rest of the Portuguese League didn't officially publish their financial figures before 2004 but by their own admission their income increased 10 fold during their Championship run and hasn't looked back since. FC Porto today is not FC Porto from before the 2004 campaign. Jose Mourinho even admitted he had to troll the 3rd division of Brazil for some players as he was operating with a limited budget.

Yes and no. We would still need the stadiums for several reasons.

1. Hosting games and several groups would mean we have to have the stadiums.

2. We have many stadiums already with good airports etc so it would not have much more in cost.

3. Regionalism. We would have to have games across the country for that reason.

So we would probably go with the 12. 5 in the West. 4 in Ontario and 3 in Quebec and Atlantic Canada.

Regina, Winnipeg, Hamilton and Ottawa are new so they would be fine as is.
Vancouver, Edmonton, Montreal are fine right now but might need some work in 10 years for example.

Calgary would need a new stadium as McMahon be no good by then. Quebec City and Halifax would also need stadiums as they don't have one. All 3 stadiums would be used for CFL and potentially for soccer after the event as I can see Quebec City and Halifax getting teams.

That leaves Toronto which I assume would get a new Stadium say 75K and the expansion of BMO.

In that way we have 7 provinces covered (PEI, NF and NB would not have been represented but their cities are too small to build and use a stadium after the event) and all the regions with the exception of the north (again too small to support any stadiums). That way all the infrastructure would be used and not wasted after the event. No need to have rotting stadiums like many cities or countries do after the event is over (look at recent Olympics hosts).

So basically, no other bids till we make another Toronto bid.

I would argue that. The impetus for change came in 1976 Montreal when they had a very poor performance. People forget it now but for years Canada and Australia were rivals in the pool. Our program faded and theirs grew. Of course in 76 we were both screwed by the GDR roid monkeys.

I don't buy that last sentence because I think we are probably farther from a Toronto Olympic bid than ever (JMO) and I think the idea of a WC has superceded the idea of another Olympics (JMO)

So Quebec gets 2 Olympics and Ontario gets zero? Yeah, that'll fly. No Canadian government will green light that.

Or we could cover the artificial turf with natural turf or we could use artificial turf like we did for the WWC. The technologies and attitudes are changing and it will be a different scene in 10 years time.
There is a requirement for at least 8 stadiums, and most World Cups have had between 9 to 12 stadiums. But I think 8 is a reasonable number.

Quote:
"FIFA has a number of requirements for stadiums hosting World Cup games. One of these is capacity. FIFA requires that a venue hosting the opening game and the final must have a net capacity of at least 80,000. For the other group matches, last 16, quarter finals and the match for third place the requirement is at least 40,000, and FIFA requests a net capacity of at least 60,000 for venues hosting the semifinals."

Source - Stadium Requirements:

80, 000 is way to big for anything Canada could use after. I think the existing size of BC Place is perfect for a final. The main audience is through television, so I don't see what the big deal is.

Here is an interesting report on the waste of past world cups. And it doesn't even discuss Qatar or Russia.

We are basically covered now. Calgary has new stadium plans in the works (regardless of the design) and the likely only new build would be Hfx or Quebec likely not both.

I don't see a new Toronto stadium unless it was 40k and expandable to 70+. There is no use for a large new Toronto stadium. Feds aren't going to fund something for a potential NFL team and i can't see Argos and TFC each having their own building, unless they can figure out a way to fill the new stadium with dates.

FIFA "requirements" are seen as guidelines, for example the final played at Maracana (Brazil 2014) had an attendance of 74,738 (capacity) not 80,000 the "requirement"

I don't think anyone would have issues when they are 50 years apart and aside from that obviously Quebec is providing something as a Winter Olympic host that Toronto isn't as a summer host seeing as the Quebec bid is seen to have a far better chance of being accepted by the IOC (JMO) I am basing that opinion on just the chatter you see on forums like these. More talk lately about a Quebec bid than a Toronto bid.

And with a Liberal government, you question that they would choose Quebec over Toronto (actually could be anywhere in Canada), you've been in Canada how long? Time to get out of the bubble my friend.

LOL, you have no idea. I'm so connected into Canada's political scene it's not even funny (granted, many people are). However, beyond your ridiculous assumptions it's clear you have no clue. You may have lived on this country 60-90 years but a fool is still a fool, doesn't make you an authority on jack (your sarcastic banter is a case in point). Just because Liberals pander to Quebec doesn't change the fact that they won't go to this extreme. Quebec is fat and happy, but god help any party that discriminates Ontario too much. Anyhow, I'm done with your predictable constant trolling, I've got better things to do.

Ahh, the usual bullshit from the RPB bubble boy, seriously, are you over 20?

Politician, professor, farmer, expert on Western Canadian affairs, is there anything you can't do? Don't run away, I thought you wanted to engage.

Quebec is no longer in the running for the 2026 Winter Olympics. They don't have a ski hill that is high enough, and the mayor doesn't support bidding . But it may be possible for Quebec to partner with Lake Placid for the ski events.

The height of the downhill is something we've heard for a long time and i think it can be overcome without cohosting, which really doesn't make sense as regards to sharing the limelight. Why tacitly encourage tourists to go to Lake Placid a competitor to Quebec ski hills.

The cohosting only makes sense in that they presently have a high enough ski hill and we don't, something that could likely be overcome through engineering and compromise. Otherwise it makes no sense.

That's the perception but it wasn't always like that. Canada was significantly stronger than them in the 1970s and early 80s. Australia was embarrassed by their poor performance and invested heavily to become more competitive. By Seoul (1988) they'd caught up to us, then moved ahead.

Canada went through a similar scenario with no gold at the 1988 Calgary winter Olympics. We got stronger each olympiad and by 2002 had become a winter sports power. The COC, turned its attention to summer Olympics after the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. We're very early on it the re-build but there are lots of promising signs already.

Canada will likely never finish first at the summer Olympics but we can certainly match the heights to which the UK and Australia have reached.
