I would have to guess that the speed of this project will pick up going into milder weather...should be at grade and rising by the end of summer...

I doubt that. I would expect it to take a year from now to get out of that hole. Once they are above the hydro lines and other buildings they can build a floor a week using fly forms and the crane but below grade each form needs to be painstakingly set up by hand and custom set.

That pit must be at least 6 story's deep...you guys are right, in that the sub-levels will take a long time. Above grade,it should rise fast...

That's sad

I'm assuming it hit his head? If so, you would think that the hard hat would've protected his head.

Either way, worker safety is as good a reason as any to remove ice that has formed on the walls of the site. Penny pinching and saving a few bucks is not a good reason to compromise on worker safety.

A 25-year-old construction worker has died after a large piece of ice fell off a wall and onto him in a construction pit about 31 metres deep on Preston Street, paramedics say.

The man was critically injured by the large chunk of ice at about 7:15 a.m., paramedics said.

It happened in the pit of a condominium construction site at 505 Preston St., near Carling Avenue.

Firefighters used a crane to perform a high angle rescue to get the injured worker out of the construction pit.

The man was lifted out at about 7:45 a.m. and was taken to hospital with critical injuries.

He later died. His identity has not been released.

Falling chunk of ice + depth of hole + acceleration due to gravity (9.81 m/s2) = this poor soul didn't have a prayer. Full body armour wouldn't have saved him, let alone a hard hat.

He probably suffered a traumatic brain injury, or spinal cord injury, or both.

The pain to claridge will be substantial as the coroner will likely convene an inquest that will keep this in the media for a long time.

In this day and age nobody should be dying in a workplace accident. Let alone a 25 year-old.

Shades of that boy killed in a trash compactor about a decade ago.

The CBC quoting Ottawa Labour Council prez Sean McKenny:


"Our understanding is that it had been pointed out to several people ... on several occasions that the ice looked like it could fall but there were no precautions, at least as we understand it, taken to ensure that the ice was removed."

McKenny said he will push for Ottawa police to conduct a criminal investigation into the fatality.

First off, condolences to the family of this young man, this is so tragic and never should have happened.

I am in the construction site management field so this really hits close to home. I cannot understand for the life of me on how a general contractor/sub contractor would allow any worker to be working below dangers such as an ice build up like this. The ice should have been removed daily before any worker would be allowed access into the excavation area. Signage warning of falling ice just doesn't cut it. Pictures posted on this board in early March clearly show the ice build up on the rock. There should be a criminal investigation as negligence seems to be the reason a young man lost his life today.

This accident was, without a doubt, preventable. The ice was identified as a hazard in this forum 2 months ago.

A young man died today because the hazard wasn't identified or, it was and it was dismissed by the contractor. The contractor and sub contractor will likely be fined and, I would wager, someone will be held criminally responsible.

This accident will be in the news for months and years to come.

I work in the area. Actually they spent a better part of this week removing snow and ice. What you don't see in the photos is the south face which has been cleared and cleaned up in preparation of installing the Black vapour barrier and rebar for pouring the concrete wall. Snow was also removed from the N.E. Corner which is seen in one of the photos.

The large icicles are a safety hazard and are removed from above what area they are working on being the south face this past week.

Every time I have visited the site this winter I have marveled at the giant icicles and wondered why anyone would work underneath them...
