Can anyone explain why the switch from steel columns to poured concrete? The slab ends up as concrete in either case, and in this build the change over seemed to take forever.

Considering that just about all tall condos/apartments are built out of poured concrete there must be some basic reason.

Concrete is better for sound proofing. Most well constructed apartment or condo buildings will use concrete.

This photo is seriously great - definitely my favorite of the city I've seen in a while. I love distance shots that are zoomed out all the way yet fill the view with as many layers of perspective as possible between the origin of photo and the focal point and still retain the detail necessary to transport the viewer to the perch used to capture the moment, a moment that can truly leave even the most familiar of people completely disoriented as to where they are, knowing only that they are in the midst of an intense urban jungle that goes on forever, an unknown Manhattan, perhaps Manhattan itself if not immediately clued in to their surroundings. I completely agree. Easily my favorite types of photos. The new buildings on the other side of the river really does create that extra few layers that takes the cityscape to the next level. No manhattan or even chicago, but it's own beast. SF is going through it's own nice boom

I agree. The new towers going up on the other side of the river really make Philly feel much larger and expansive than it ever has before.
