We say we want variety and competition in Canada... but in reality ''no we don't'' is essentially what we said to Target Canada during their short existance. We have Loblaws, Costco and Walmart case closed.

The reason Target failed with consumers wasn't that we didn't give them a chance, it was because prior to their entering the market, our only experience with Target was in the USA, where almost all consumer goods are cheaper for a variety of reasons. The Canadian public then associated Target with great prices and goods you can't get north of the border. Americans, on the other hand, see Target as a cleaner, more expensive, less trashy version of American Wal-Mart, so when Target Canada wasn't much better than Wal-Mart Canada, we were disappointed and wound up ignoring it in favor of better prices and familiarity.
