Depending on the weather I might try and get some snapshots but a bunch of stuff is happening in New West:

Elliot street is well underway... maybe 9 storeys poured.

The project at Carnarvon and Sixth is breaking grade.

The hole for Riversky is being dug.

Port Royal is motoring along in Queensborough

Fencing just went up around the Masonic Hall, which I suspect means that the rental tower there is about to start building.

The front street parkade demolition has gotten to Mackenzie street (so about halfway). This is great, but it is really showing off how dilapidated and unstreet friendly a lot of Front Street is (and how little thought was given to how Trapp/Holbrook met front).

The goddamn elevator at the fourth street overpass to the river park is FINALLY working.

EDIT: Also it looks like the first residential tower is underway at Brewery District.

For Park Royal hood of New West, it is nice that there are high rises on both sides of the river inlet/ narrow waterway near the coast, a first in the Lower Mainland. Hope they put more taller structures there in the future, and eventually a road/pedestrian bridge linking that neighbourhood to downtown New West.

Considering how allergic New West has been to bridges, I think another car bridge is totally out of the question. Maybe if we're lucky the rail bridge will be rebuilt and include a pedestrian and bike crossing with it.

It even has a snappy name Q2Q. Issue seems to be that the Marine authority hates the idea since the North Arm of the Fraser is a major barge shipping route and Quayside residents are extremely NIMBY and complain about how the bridge will affect their views and/or their local playground (which is a bit more fair). I think it will happen longterm, but it sounds like major issues need to be hashed out first.

As for towers in Queensburrough: hard to say? That area is presently fairly built out with midrise-apartments. Not sure how much space is left for taller towers.

Oh, and one more bit of news: there is a wide mid-rise apartment complex going up on Agnes east of Fourth that they are digging the hole for. I think it is only going to be six stories, but it's got a city-block wide footprint, meaning that it adds significant density to the area. It's a pretty analagous project to the apartments that went up on Royal Ave just across the street from City Hall.

Oh man, I did some poking around in the New West projects page and apparently there is an early application for a 33 storey building at 618 Carnarvon, which is kind of right where Brick and Mortar is (kitty corner to the sixth and carnarvon project at grade). Which... dang, I hope it doesn't adversely affect Brick and Mortar, love that shop.

Burquitlam update

Thank you urbancanadian for all your work monitoring the development in Burquitlam.

Looks like Concert/YMCA are entering into Burquitlam with a land swap/rec center development. Tri-City News Article

Quote:
The city of Coquitlam has announced a partnership with the YMCA of Greater Vancouver and Concert Properties that will see the construction of a new recreation facility and the expansion of a park amenity in the Burquitlam neighbourhood.

The new YMCA will be constructed in conjunction with a mixed-use development led by Concert Properties on 2.1 acres of the 3.6 acre Burquitlam Park. Staff said the project will be subject to rezoning approvals.

In exchange for the land, the developer will give the city 2.55 acres on Cottonwood Avenue, which staff said will be used for the future expansion of Cottonwood Park from its current 2.2 acres to 4.75 acres.
Emphasis added by me

So the city will make out with 0.45 acres more parkland in the area plus a new rec center at the Burquitlam park site.

Interesting deal. Anyone know exactly which parcels of land they are swapping?

Concert owns the Whitgift gardens apartments along the south half of Cottonwood. It appears that they will be expanding the Cottonwood park which is beside the Concert lands and south of the Polygon site. Looks like the Cottonwood park will be expanded on the Concert lands.

Burquitlam Capital by Magusta Developments.

At the heart of this growing city, just steps from Burquitlam SkyTrain Station on the Evergreen Line, there is a new community emerging—a place to call home. This is The Burquitlam Capital: a planned 23-storey development that’s right where you want to be.

This is a sensible land swap you can already see the paved new street behind 1080 on streetview

Also look at the top of the rail ROW looking back and you can see the eventual road ROW clearly. (Here)

Looks great.

What is going on with the International Trade Centre project? Stalled because the owner is wanted by the Chinese government?

If that's true, and I'm sure it is, then that development shouldn't go forward. Do we really want to see a corrupt criminal get rich from a development, just for the sake of seeing a new shiny building get built? I know I don't. His daughter is also the leader of the young liberals party. Pathetic.

Oh common, don't punish her for the "sins of her father" plus they kicked her out.

Personally I think that more than half of these Chinese invested construction projects are money laundering strategies....
