Sodium heads use a magnetic ballast, starter and capacitor. LED heads have a digital ballast.

While replacing just the bulb in current reflector heads is possible, the lighting is very washed out and results too much dazzle effect (similar to bad automotive retrofits). Replacing old heads with new LEDs results in a much more direct and desirable light pattern.

LED replacements by community are determined roughly by the old group bulb replacement program. I'm not sure what pattern major roads are following, but I know these luminaries are in short supply due to high demand worldwide.

Edit: Some decorative luminaries will not be available in LED, but I know post top globes (like on Centre St bridge) and king acorns (like on 17th SW) are.

My second question was going to be why have so many different styles of decorative lighting already been converted to LED within the City Centre.

I'll shoot Evan Wooley/Druh Farrell an email when I get the chance about LED conversion on the main streets I mentioned.

Depends if the lighting falls under Parks or Roads. I'm only familiar with Roads.

This is an important project starting this year linking EV and the CBD. Hope to see something similar along the tracks.

Anybody know if Eau-Claire West river path redevelopment, 17th ave, new Beltline park on 16th ave projects are for sure starting this spring?

Hopefully the CMLC can get the Stampede development plans back in order. The connection from Stampede to 17th Avenue could be the biggest game changer in that area.

It could be tied with the City's plan for 17th avenue rebuild, but that would probably be asking too much for three organizations to talk to each other.

I'm very happy that it's being discussed at this early point. A cool way to focus the redevelopment could be to connect 17th to Olympic Way as a single contiguous active-use corridor, that would connect 17th ave all the way to the Bow river through the East Village.

Any updates on the Chinook - 61st Avenue improvements? How about the 8th Street SW redesign? Both these projects are hugely important. It's a shame there is so little attention towards them.

Just out of curiosity, are there plans to develop the long strip of parking lots where the Beltline and Downtown Calgary meet? So that would be the upper (downtown) side of where the rail passes through the city..

Cause I was thinking that would be an amazing place to have a nice "Central Park" of Calgary ...

I wonder what the land value of the CP rail ROW would be if it could be developed. Probably not anywhere near enough now, but maybe one day that value could be used to fund a tunneled diversion.

They've already sold off the adjacent lands, rendering the value of the ROW itself very limited because it is too narrow to be developed. The only utility to the site would be to adjacent landowners who could hypothetically purchase the lands at a steep discount. Unfortunately the ship has sailed on moving the CP mainline from its current location.

I would love to see this along the north side of the tracks for a few blocks - mini-millennium park. Best bet is if CMLC gets involved - expropriate the land while values are lower, develop park space and maybe sell off a couple peripheral parcels for development. There's no way the city itself could pull it off judging by their effectiveness with other large scale public realm projects - see 8 st and west eau-claire project delays.

Yes, there was a ship back in the 1960s. CP evaluated shifting the mainline northward to Beddington from Inglewood, north around Nose Hill joining with the existing line near Cochrane. CP decided against this due to cost and the fact that it added several miles to the mainline.

Ultimately, they along with the City attempted to move the line parallel to the Bow River but luckily for us that scheme failed.
