Why would they host a game in regina ever? Because there is a new stadium there? What a ridiculous post

#1 why would any team host an event outside there own backyard? Every NHL team has some sort of stadium in most cases twice the size of mosaic even in the worst markets the spectacle would bring in more than 33K.

#2 why would the NHL let this happen? Teams that have never hosted are nipping at the heels of bettman to get these event's and they are gonna set off some random american teams in a small city in Saskatchewan canada?

#3 Don't compare this to the London NFL thing. That's different the NFL was trying to both gauge and generate interest. The NHL has no realistic interest in Saskatchewan and hockey is already #1 by far there.

#4 I'm sure the Pats and blades are looking into this already. The NHL would directly be stepping on the WHL's toes

Heritage Classic

Bombers' Season Ticket Holders have no special access to the Heritage Classic as it is an NHL event:

Not surprising given that they apparently won't be putting up extra seating for the Heritage Classic. Between the Jets' ST base as well as league sponsors and partners, I'm sure most of the tickets would be accounted for right there.

Kind of surprising that they won't do one end zone though, given that I'm sure HC tickets will be going for top dollar and the Bombers would likely want to chip in with a contribution to have extra seating available for the LDC.

As far as NHL holding a hockey game at New Mosaic Stadium in Regina like IGF in Winnipeg is apparently scheduled to hold, i'm not sure there would be any in-province interest in organizing an NHL event at new stadium here, unless an outside promoter were to try to organize it.

NHL support in Saskatchewan is the lowest in all of Canada (less than 30% of the province follows the NHL, 65% follow the Riders though) but people's community sports spirit in Saskatchewan would support an NHL event to capacity at the new stadium if it were ever to happen. ALL the Grey Cup games ever held in Regina were sell-outs which is more than can be said about last couple of years Grey Cups. Even community sports spirit for newly adopted pro teams in the Province is welcomed with open arms in Saskatchewan. For example the National Lacrosse League's Saskatchewan Rush, in Saskatoon gets as many at 11,000 people per game, making it one of the top attended NLL teams along with Denver & Toronto's teams.

If the league tells them they have to play a game in a neutral market they can't say no.

Even though this is not NHL related, Texas A&M played their first home game this past season in Houston because they wanted to. Had nothing to do with their stadium not being available nor NRG being a bigger stadium which it isn't by a long shot. It was strictly a marketing/promotional exercise.

Are places like Tampa, Miami and Phoenix begging for such a game? Could they even hold one while still meeting standards? Such teams might want to play in a neutral location just for the publicity and exposure. If Regina provided them and the league with the best deal it would happen.

The NFL has played dozens of games all over the place. It's overwhelmingly done to generate interest so they can cash in on merchandise and TV rights sales. Huge money involved. And according to another poster hockey is far from #1 in SK. So holding a game to boost interest would lead to further profits and those profits would likely be larger and longer lasting than if they were to hold the game in a place such as Tulsa.

They would work together. This is what happened last month with the Stadium Series at Coors Field. On 2/20 the University of Denver played Colorado College and attracted over 30K. Then the next weekend the Avalanche sold out their game against the Red Wings. The Pats, Blades and the new venue would all be big winners as would the NHL. This is far from a dumb idea.

$5.2 billion and you can't even get a Saturday night playoff game. What a joke. Even the NFL has more respect for their rights holders for whom it is very hawkish with typically.

Plus with all due respect to my hometown. Regina is small place. 60+ USA metros are larger than Regina. Why would the NHL not go to any of those places first. Tulsa, Oklahoma to damn Billings are all larger than Regina. Why not go there?
Since when is Billings larger than Regina?

You can make all the comparisons you want its an empty idea that makes no sense. It was pointed out that sask has a higher number of riders fan than NHL fans. That doesn't mean that sask isnt a hockey mad province but 33% of 1.2 million is a lot of NHL fans.

Yeah, look at how many outdoor NHL games have been played in Canada since this trend started.

Only three in about 15 years.

Though we will see Winnipeg in late 2016 and likely Ottawa in 2017.

Desjardins Group has signed a 15 year lease and will move 1200 of its employees (500 more employees forcasted in the next few years) in the tower of the Olympic Stadium in 2018. There are 12 stories of the tower which can accomodate office space and starting next year, the windows and concrete slabs of these 12 stories will be replaced by a window wall.

^ Good news. I find it astounding that the space in that tower has been vacant for nearly 30 years... I had always assumed that either the RIO or some kind of sports bureaucracy was in there.

When are Toronto and Montreal getting theirs? It's peculiar that the two biggest markets in Canada still haven't had one yet.

Where would Montreal play an outdoor game? The Big O isn't outdoors, and it seems that the idea of holding the outdoor game in a venue the same size or smaller than the regular home rink like Molson, Saputo or Uniprix is anathema when the whole point of these events is to enable the NHL to cash in with a massive gate. (You didn't really think it was about "heritage", did you?)

Right, but the NHL doesn't really want to pick fights with the owners.

If teams want to play games outside of their home arena they can but it devalues their franchise along with other franchises in the league. A lot of people in this thread don't seem to understand that North American sports league entirely depend on the valuation of their franchises. The implication that teams have to host games in other areas because their own market is weak is akin to asking to be relocated.

Not entirely, and Los Angeles did, so yes. The Stadium Series games in the US are driven by national TV numbers and the three teams you listed wouldn't draw as many as Chicago/Boston/NYR/Philadelphia etc. They're at the bottom of the list, not because they don't want to, but because NBC sees higher viewership in other markets.

But it's about maximum growth with games in non-current markets. What growth is there to be had by the Oilers or Jets or Flames in Saskatchewan that hasn't already been maximized by preseason games?

Not a bad idea to tie in Junior Hockey, honestly, but there needs to be interest from NHL owners, a local group willing to use the stadium, and acceptance from the stadium and Rough Riders.

So far, the only people who seem to want this are people who saw Winnipeg getting one and thought Regina should have one, too, which I can't really emphasize enough. If this idea was being posited by a group in Regina interested in hosting one i'd be a bit more positive, but unfortunately this isn't the case.

Hope everyone is getting excited for a Parliament Hill game.

In the event that the Nords ever come back i'd love a Habs/Nords game at Plains of Abraham, too, as floated by someone in the know years ago.

I think the odds are very good that Ottawa will get a game in 2017, but I am not sure it will be on Parliament Hill. It could be at Lansdowne or on LeBreton Flats as well.

Watched the Ski racing on the Plains of Abhraham this weekend. The Televised images looked great. It would make a good venue for a heritage Classic.

The Riders unveiled renders of their football operations areas in New Mosaic today. Needless to say, they look incredible. Going to attract some top-notch talent.
