It is indeed closing on Feb 15 and the property has been sold. I had heard that the owner of Little Louis had purchased it but they may have mispoke and meant St. Louis.

Big difference between Little Louis' and St Louis!

I'm banking on St Louis. The existing location on Mountain Road is very busy, and they have been looking at opening a second location in Dieppe for at least a year. The original rumour was that they were looking in the Dieppe Blvd area, but the old Garden Breeze location makes sense, especially with it's proximity to Champlain Place and the Dieppe Cineplex.

Ya I talked to them again and they confirmed St. Louis which makes the most sense. It's an extremely high traffic area and should work out great for the franchise. I wonder though if a parking deal can be worked out with the hotel in behind. The restaurant itself doesn't seem to have a whole lot of spaces.

According to the T&T, Dieppe city council has just voted in favour of building a $1.3M skating oval behind Place 1604.

There will be a refrigeration unit under the skating surface, and space will be leased in the new hotel to be built next door to house the refrigeration equipment and a Zamboni. The oval will be 165 meters around.

Shades of the oval at the Halifax Commons!

So, with this and the new events centre project, there will soon be three municipally funded places outdoors to go skating during the winter.

1) - Skating oval at Place 1604
2) - Skating rink at Moncton City Hall plaza.
3) - Outdoor skating rink at the new downtown events centre (will also have undersurface refrigeration).

Not too bad........

Undersurface refrigeration seems to be the big thing nowadays, especially since our winters are getting too unstable to rely on natural freezing.

Fredericton has eight outdoor rinks, but only one has been reliable to skate on this winter due to undersurface refrigeration. The other seven are likely closed for the season soon.

Here's an image of the new refrigerated skating oval to be built behind Dieppe city hall:

The building in the background is the new hotel (Wingate Dieppe) which will also be built this year.

Acadie Nouvelle is reporting that a 10-storey (!) residential building is in the planning stages on Sunset St. The paper states that they have seen plans from Architects 4 but that they cannot reveal many details yet. A presentation will be made at city council on March 14.

http://www.acadienouvelle.com/actualites...0-etages-dans-le-centre-ville-de-dieppe/

The building will have 155 units and indoor parking (unclear from the article if it's underground).

I'll try to translate a few more details.

Interesting Dieppe will have to amend the munical plan and the zoning by-law to accommodate this building.

The developer is Sira (http://www.sira.nb.ca/), which owns the most significant residential properties around Mapleton Rd & Plaza Blvd (Mapleton Village, Château Mapleton, Mapleton Estates).

The first paragraph of the article states that the building will be 10 storeys at its highest point, whereas another paragraph states that it will be "at least" 10 storeys. Because of its height, zoning bylaws & the municipal plan would need to be modified.

On February 22, city council approved the public presentation (scheduled on March 14). At least two councillors (Dallaire & Thibodeau) have already voiced opposition, which are basically whining moans against change and excuses that there's too much work involved in terms of variances. (Moncton better have the developer on speed dial if Dieppe shoots this down.) One councillor (Gaudet) was more receptive, expressing the awareness that Dieppe is growing and this sort of development is needed if their downtown is to take hold.

The building would be L-shaped, with the peak on Sunset St, sitting roughly like this (from my understanding of the description provided in the article):

That's infuriating. Looks like a great place for that kind of development.

I'm surprised they didn't say "but think of the children!!"

Seriously, they actually were complaining about the work required to look at the variances - really!!! If there was ever a reason to not re-elect these councillors, this should be it.

Sira is a serious developer. This therefore is likely a legitimate proposal. Dieppe had better hop on this right away. The location is good, close to Champlain Place and downtown Dieppe. It should be popular.

Meanwhile, Moncton's own downtown high-rise proposal (55 Queen) seems to be circling the drain. A contact of mine downtown is not hopeful.........

Agreed! This is exactly where Dieppe should be growing in density.

The new Starbucks on Acadie Ave is now open (Starbucks #7 for greater Moncton).

The drive thru looked very busy as I was driving by this morning, even more busy than the Timmies next door!!!

A 10-story building will be very prominent there. The 4-story apartment block on Sunset built a few years ago looks much taller because of it's location on the hill. That'll make for quite a change to the Dieppe skyline!

It will if it ever gets passed... If the building style is the same I've seen for similar projects it would look like the apartment complex at 135 Gould except Taller, and possibly a bit bigger on the face towards Sunset.

Note: I do know the building at 135 Gould was built By/For Killam Properties, and the potential new building on Sunset will be by Sira. I'm using it as a reference.

135 Gould is a wood-frame construction with a sloped roof and vinyl siding (like most residential building construction in the area thus far). At 10 storeys, you'll likely see steel-frame construction and a quite different looking building from the outside.

Indeed, I was thinking the same thing. I betcha it'll look more like a 12-13 storey building with it's position on that hillside. It'll be a defining feature of Dieppe. Dieppe city council should do whatever it takes to facilitate this project, but given the prominence that this building will have on the skyline, care should be taken to ensure that this building is not an ugly or generic "commie block" type structure.

I'm not saying that city council should place outrageous design restrictions on the structure, just make sure that the cladding is contemporary and visually pleasing.........

I think Dieppe has done a very good job at this so far...taking all recent developments within the past few years on Champlain st and on Dieppe blvd as an example.

And that 4 story apartment/retail spot at 101 Sunset Place behind Canadian Tire looks pretty decent as well.

Dieppe is doing a much better job at approving more modern contemporary designs than Moncton, IMO.
