Yeah...but, if he read what the article said about SA, he'd s*** in his pants as his head explodes.

Yes, sir. That "man" is twisted. Sorry. But, it is true. Cant believe he's a mod. Wish his "title" and "privileges" could get revoked. I bet things on the SA threads would be much more pleasant if that were to happen!

I think MLB could do well in the metro. Round Rock Express has done pretty well over the years.

Well at least the part of the article discussing Austin as a candidate is actually about sports in Austin as opposed to the whole Raiders hype.

There is something wrong with him. He deleted a bunch of posts in an SA thread last week that was starting to get entertaining.
Apparently we can't be having fun on here. Only censored cheerleading is allowed. He has a suspicious alter ego in the SA forum that comes to his defense when needed who also slaps people around for "negativity".

Back on topic...

It should be noted that Austin as the #2 choice was only the opinion of the Fox Sports writer and not MLB. If you read other articles about expansion, Austin or S.A. are not even mentioned. Mexico City seems like a favorite in addition to Montreal. Other contenders include Charlotte, Vegas, Nashville among others.

the Fox sportswriter also had a phone interview with TWC Austin but didn't seem to be entirely up to speed on finer points of Austin scene and market now and the conditions here for it to unfold.

I'd spring for season tickets if we ever got an MLB team, but I don't see it taking off any time soon.

I've been in San Marcos for better part of last 2 years for grad school...given the remarkable growth here I think San Marcos is getting ripe for Minor League baseball. It would appeal to folks who don't want to trek to Missions or Express game across metro areas in rush hour. A shoe-in for AA spot if San Antonio Missions and the city gets their act together on a move to AAA with a new stadium by downtown.

I don't see MLB coming to Austin without the Ryan Sanders circle in Round Rock having a hand in the coup.

There was this article:

http://www.bizjournals.com/austin/news/2...ue-baseball-in-austin-dont-get-your.html

Though I disagree quite a bit with their "study". The claim that each and every MLB team requires $102B to support (twice any other sport) seems dubious.

Also is the claim the longhorns require $26B (and get none of it from outside the metro). And that all ~60 power 5 also each require $26B, while other college teams require $0.

Then there was this:
"Others, such as Virginia Beach, have booming economies of their own that rival Austin’s economic growth."

Austin is growing at 4X the rate of VB.

I'm entirely too lazy to confirm this thought: I'd bet that the Texas Longhorns do better financially than a good handful of MLB teams as is.

And the point on Virginia Beach over Austin economically is just comical. No offense to VA Beach, but the author of that article simply doesn't know what's happening in Central Texas right now (or all of Texas, for that matter).

Also, any team in Austin would pull in fans and the TV market from San Antonio just as the Spurs pull in fans and the TV market from Austin. Much like DFW and MSP, Austin-San Antonio is a powerful combination that one can't ignore when they do these sort of studies.

UT pays athletes with education expenses (tuition, books, tutors), room and board, some meals, some clothes, and a small stipend. They're not exactly slave labor.

If you want to say they aren't paid much compared to what the UT athletic department brings in, then that's a different argument and you are probably right. At least for the football players.

As for baseball needing twice as much money as the other sports, I definitely believe it.

Salary Caps
NFL: $155.27 million
NHL: $71.4 million
NBA: $70 million
MLB: Unlimited

MLB has a luxury tax limit instead of a cap. The threshold last year was $189 million. In 2015, the LA Dodgers had a payroll of $298.3 million, almost double what the NFL cap is. That was the highest in MLB history, though. LA had to pay $43.7 million in luxury tax.

This year so far, MLB payrolls range from $50 - $248 million.

So a smaller-market MLB team pays 1/3 what _every single_ NFL team pays (every single team is required to spend at least an average of 89% of the cap over a 4 year period).

But a small-market MLB team needs twice the economy of an NFL team?

Perhaps it's a function of there being 81 MLB home games vs. 8 in the NFL.

Dallas had the biggest attendance last year in the NFL: 731,672 (91,459 per).

Tampa had the lowest attendance in the MLB: 1,247,668.
LAD had the highest: 3,764,815.

It should also be mentioned that NFL contracts are not guaranteed.

Right, but those Cowboys tickets average >$100.

While the Rays average 20 bucks

Just FYI

San Antonio will be home to two professional sports teams in the near future.

MLS on its way to San Antonio.

Waiting list to buy season and package game tickets to Spurs games.

And who says we can't support professional sports teams.

San Antonio is soooooo underrated ALL the time. But that's alright! We know who we are and what we have!!!

GO SPURS GO!!
