The baseball diamond mentioned as still being visible in the 1962 picture is your answer . The "East" side bleachers were portable at that time. And could be moved to accommodate baseball. This would have been the optimal configuration of the property that could fit a baseball diamond and football field.
The West seating was made permanent/concrete sometime in the 50s (portions of which are still present at Mosaic today). When baseball was permanently removed from the site sometime between '62 and '71, they would have had to demolish the permanent West side to reorientate the field. This wouldn't have been deemed acceptable (waste of money so soon after building the structure), so the field was maintained on the angle and things got shoe-horned into the setup we have today.
You'll also notice with the 70s Expansion (visible in the '87 photo), the street south of the stadium was eliminated/re-routed and a block of houses to the West were demolished.

Didn't I read that both teams will be on the same sidelines at BMO? Therefore maybe a tarp isn't needed?
^ They're both on the west side, where the lowest rows are barely elevated at all. I don't see how they can see the first 3 rows for football at BMO... the views will probably be obstructed to the point that the seats will be useless... jury's out on rows 4-6.

Nothing was worse than the view from rows 1 to 5 at skydome in football mode.
Sens have plans for Canadian Tire Centre even if they move to LeBreton

The owner of the Ottawa Senators says the organization won't abandon Kanata if the team moves downtown.
Eugene Melnyk and his group of bidders for LeBreton Flats hinted Friday at longer-term plans for the Canadian Tire Centre, if the team's home ice moves downtown.
The building would no longer be a rink, they told a Postmedia editorial board.
Melnyk said the team has a plan to repurpose the Canadian Tire Centre and build more on the 76 acres he owns around the Kanata arena.
He's promising details within the next month.
"I think it's going to be a spectacular site even post-Sens," Melnyk said.
Club president Cyril Leeder said it might convert the CTC into a smaller venue and hosting other ice sports, such as curling.
Melnyk was clear the Senators need more revenue beyond hockey, merchandise, sponsorships and food and beverage. That's why building a downtown arena and complementing it with a mixed-use community is important for the Senators.
The club is battling it out with Devcore Canderel DLS, a group that's also proposing an NHL arena for LeBreton, plus other attractions.
I'm not sure how fast the ticket master website is updated, it's not real time, (Nothing has changed yet from this morning) But I recorded all the available seats at BMO this morning per section and 15,598 were still up for grabs. So at 27,000 seats that means they Sold 11,402 in presale. I'm not sure how they are doing after day 1. I would imagine they are targeting around 18,000 STH before kick off, seems realistic.

^ Yeah, it's not really my thing but I guess it does give off a certain classy "collegiate" vibe... you see that kind of ornate masonry along the sidelines in some NCAA venues, or at least that's what I associate it with. Molson Stadium falls into that category being on McGill's campus and all.
Montreal also has this a sort of stone at field level, Can't say I'm a fan
I think I'm going to have to wait until I can see it. It'd look better than plain concrete, but a well-made/positioned covering rectifies that easily enough (and I think that's the kind of look I'd prefer anyway), but we'll see soon enough.
