I don't think those dang kids got all uppity and made up their own numbers.

Article in the Coast with a small rendering.

http://www.thecoast.ca/RealityBites/arch...hat-the-renovated-khyber-might-look-like

Looks like a great proposal. My hat is off to all those who put forth the effort to not only save the place, but to give it improved functionality as well.

With regards to the $4M estimated by the city, with all due respect their specialty is not preserving heritage properties, so I wouldn't expect them to have the time or expertise to figure out how to do it on a smaller budget. The city is doing the right thing in this case, letting the people take it over who have the desire and ability to properly care for it.

Note that the Oxford/Young proposal is NOT for the empty lot where the old Ultramar used to be, this is across the street next door to the Westcliffe restaurant. I like the look of the storefronts, but I'm meh about the upper levels.

Agreed... at least the upper bits aren't faux though?

That lot has been vacant for a long time.

There was a sign up for a proposal on that lot years ago, but appears to have been withdrawn. Instead, lets knock down four (unremarkable) houses across the street and (maybe) build something there.

According to this report going to Regional Council next week 2859 Robie is now in pre-application stage and pending approval of the land purchase we should see it come forward the near future. Banc is behind this project and Point North which is under construction two blocks north.

Any indications on height?

Its a small lot... but a 20 story apartment building in there would be great for the small businesses in the area and the location is fantastic.

I seem to remember a rendering for this site years ago that was in the 20 story range but it has been so long. Have not seen or heard of anything recent tho.

That would be fantastic. This part of town is really changing, and I'll be interested to see what happens with the old Piercey's site.

Now if someone would just right the ridiculous wrong that was done when that Shopper's was built with a giant parking lot on such a prime spot across the street...

I was living in Halifax when that Shoppers went up. I remember thinking what a missed opportunity it was, but how it was completely unsurprising and how there weren't many examples of good modern development nearby. Nowadays it would stand out as being worse than the norm for new buildings in that part of town, and hopefully that style of development won't be permitted at all in a few years when the Centre Plan is adopted. In a way it's a sign of how far the city has come in recent years.

And this is the latest rendering for it. No developer partner yet though.

In related news, the Coast is reporting a development rumour that a new company called "The Keith (TM)" is proposing the development of a wall that will be built along Spring Garden Road in efforts to keep library-going latte-sipping elitists from entering downtown. Costs are estimated to be in the millions, but The Keith maintains that the wall will be paid from Judith Hare's pension. When asked if this wall will exceed the ramparts bylaw, The Keith was said to have responded with "The wall just got 10 feet taller. In the good ol' days we'd have just knocked the Citadel down with a Cat-8 so fast, but today everyone's politically correct!".

Naturally, the Coast got it wrong. The wall is intended to keep the latte-sipping elitists out of the rest of HRM and keep them downtown where they can only annoy themselves. It also has the added side benefit of keeping our tax dollars away from them as well.

However, the Citadel quote is close to accurate.

Waye's update number 39 of the center plan.

Just a few anti-development leaning comments in this one....

If by "anti-development" you mean "not unequivocally in support of all development no matter what," then I guess...

Looks like Waye is trying to engage the neighbourhood and developers (not mutually exclusive categories) to figure out how the area can accommodate the substantial inevitable development that will occur in future, without running roughshod over the valuable architectural heritage that already exists. That sounds like planning to me, not "anti-development".
