Thanks for the pics. From where to where does the trail along Rumble run exactly? Like from which street to which street?

From Macpherson to Gilley about 800 meters long. It's not on any bike map as Burnaby has not published 2016 bike map yet...

Vancouver's bike share program is finally launching. As soon as June if you can't believe it (I won't until I see it).

Great news! June is not that far away. Reading the presentation, I'm surprised how much evolution happened in bikeshares.

My prediction for sponsor is Telus! They have a very low profile so far in Vancouver sponsorship-wise. Maybe Vancity, though

Telus did try and change that with BC Place... but the Liberals fumbled that one.

It would be amazing (but extremely unlikely) if they integrated Compass Card with the bike share system - not necessarily immediately for transfer purposes, but for a common stored value, and perhaps eventually a hybrid monthly pass or (yes) even transfer purposes.

I think that would be a great idea - these bikes i think have consoles that have individual RFID readers and it's one less card that people have to get and that the CoV has to implement.

Well the CoV doesn't have to implement anything. They are just providing space and some capital funding.

Pricing was missing from yesterday's press conference. That will be a big one.

I think it's a huge additional expense to have the readers on every bike. You just need them on the bike share station. That's how they do it here in Mexico City (which has an excellent bike sharing system, BTW)

It's the same card that you use for metro and buses (the only thing you have to do is register it with an ID and a credit card to be able to use the bike system as well). Using the bike system costs $450 pesos a year (about $35 Canadian dollars) and you get 1 hour free every time you take a bike out, and then you pay additional for every hour after that. The trick is you just switch bikes every hour and it's free. There are more than enough bike stations to be able to do this.

I don't know how they're going to implement the system here in Vancouver, but there's an advantage to building everything into the bike because then you can operate them like Car2Go style car sharing where the bikes can simply be locked up anywhere. You find the closest bike using your phone app, "tap in" to start the rental, ride it to your destination, "tap out" and lock it up. That can be a lot more convenient than having to go to a bike station at the start and end of your trip.

Edit: I see that their system does in fact support this: "To end your trip, just lock your bike at one of our convenient hub locations or at any regular bike rack for a small additional fee."

That's actually really cool. Much like C2G, I've seen bike share stations that are full during rush times.

Why are they charging an additional fee for locking it up at a regular bike rack?

is there a map available showing where these convenient hub locations are?

Probably because if nobody ever picks it up from where it was left and takes it back to a bike station then at some point they'll have to send someone out to bring it back themselves so that it can recharge. Not sure how long the bikes can go without charging, but I'd expect it to be something in the small number of days.

I see they're also offering a bit of free time to anyone who picks up a bike from a non-station location and drops it off at a station, for the same reason no doubt.
