No way Loblaws is directly involved with SkyCity as the are getting out of running the retail side for anything under 100,000 sq ft. Extra Foods are all converting franchise owned No Frills.

The bad blood between Fortress and Sobeys over the Collier Center mess will likely keep those two apart.

Call it a hunch but Save On Foods is trying to establish a presence here and has talked about wanting to do it with smaller stores than typical for grocers.

In terms of the east Exchange I have said it before the local independent specialty stores is what the area needs. Start with a butcher, deli, produce and dairy. Add in select middle store items and you have something people could work with. You don't need thousands of sq ft or dry packaged goods.

For me, urban living translates into shopping at various stores: a bakery, butcher, wine store, a smaller grocery store, etc. That makes living downtown enjoyable. Hopefully such a lifestyle will be possible in downtown Winnipeg before long.

I've thought the old Bricks location on Market could be pieced out into a "market" with individual shops as you suggest. Not unlike how the Forks is with similar shops.

I live in the East Exchange and choose to not have a vehicle like many others. I know several people who'd be all over a place like this.

There is so much wasteland and surface lots in the area ripe for development. Density is needed to make such ventures possible. Does anyone know if any landscaping will be done at H2O? The materials used are atrocious enough, but the grounds are pathetic.

I live right downtown and I buy my bread at a bakery on Tache. It's a 25 minute walk there. I found a bakery on Graham and they didn't have any bread.

A charming bakery or butcher would look wonderful on the lot behind the Galpern building. Perhaps a five storey building with apartments above.

Wow, that's pretty late in the game to go on hold. Surprised that the lender was willing to put their whole investment in jeopardy by not extending any more credit. They must be pretty confident that they can recoup most everything in a fire sale.

That is going to be a great rotting carcass to stare at for years to come.

^^^ So what does this mean for 62M? The project is done, dead and over so it sits and rots until someone tears it down or otherwise?

Seems a bit extreme for something that's so far along in development - maybe 80%?

It'll get going again, one way or another. It's mostly complete on the outside. At least it's sealed and the roofing done. Not sure if any mechanical systems are running.

Thought you might be interested in this: a new pair of streetlights were installed at 110 & 132 James. They're incredibly bright at street level, however no light spills from the sides or top of the fixtures at all. Given the proximity to our windows, this is a very welcome update!

^ I've noticed those popping up all over town. They often make places seem darker at night given that the light seems to project straight down as opposed to the old sodium lamps that created a lot of ambient light.

Yeah I agree. They are brighter and white rather than the orange, but they don't spread as much.

I imagine if the current developer is unable to raise any more money, the project will go into receivership. Someone will surely jump at the chance to buy it 'on sale' out of receivership, finish it and take a handsome profit.

Same thing happened with the cubes, no? The cladding wasn't complete for like 3 years after the buildings went up. Really gives off an ugly public perception when you can't finish something you started properly.

Those are the new LED fixtures that Manitoba Hydro will be installing to replace the High Pressure Sodium lights in Winnipeg over the next 4 to 5 years. they are starting in the north west part of Winnipeg and moving in a clockwise direction.

It kind of just seems like they're doing big areas first or anywhere where there's construction. Corydon, Warsaw, Osborne North, lots of places have them already. Also anytime they have to repair or replace a sodium one now they just put up an LED.

I'm just very curious what they'll do in Places like the Exchange, Portage downtown, and the Leg, where there's globes that have exposed bulbs with the point of creating ambient light. I think the sidewalk lamps on Corydon are FAR too bright, they actually hurt your eyes walking down the street. Can you imagine the Leg not all lit up in a glowing yellow? The white seems to remove all the texture from buildings.
