That is a new one for me, and I love what they did.

Agreed, this was an excellent article. There were a lot of things I learned that I didn't pick up in local media... such as the name of the former Macy's development... "The Grand at Fifth Avenue".

Definitely turned out better than the original renderings. And I really like how Moe's Southwest Grill anchors its base!

I'm still waiting for National Review to run an article on Pittsburgh's urban future.

Thanks for the pics Tbone.
I gotta say, I hate the color scheme of The Yards at 3 Crossings. Worst I've seen of the new developments.

btw, I love the massing of the u/c residential development at SSW... makes the South Side riverfront in that area look super dense from the bird's eye view in West Oakland.

Well, it isn't new yet... but the rendering of the new building does look pretty ok, IMO. Going to go well with the old building/mural.

They keep adding to it too. Every few weeks there is a new material/texture/color. It's not getting any better.

Doesn't seem like the most urban use in the world... but I'll wait for more details before I condemn it...

Pittsburgh's urban future should look like the Settlers Ridge.

Sorry, I just meant I hadn't heard of the project before. And that is indeed what I like about it: you can see how the new building was inspired by the old including the mural.

It looks ok from that angle... but I hate the look from Wood St... which is dominated by the blank garage component... which is by far the largest component of this mediocre mid-rise that was allegedly designed by Arquitectonica.

Yeah, I was just walking down Wood Street today and thought about how awful it looked. How many other buildings with integral garages exist in Downtown anyway?

In 20 years, when self-driving cars make downtown parking a thing of the past, we're really going to regret having that parking garage there.

This pic is really the only finished view I've seen of it. Haven't seen the finished product in person yet and have not seen the view from Wood yet. I forgot that most of it is a parking garage Arquitectonica is generally grand slam or bad strikeout for me.

That's unfortunate. Is there at least ground floor use planned (or existing) for Wood St.?

I imagine this has been brought up, but Pittsburgh Public Market is closing at the end of February (the landlord declined to renew their lease).

They posted a blog of future plans for their various stores:

Quote:
Here’s where to find some of our vendors after PPM closes, or in some cases, in addition to their Market shops. We’ll update you about all of our vendors as they confirm plans.
  • Backstage Alpaca: Next season starts in October at the new Pennsylvania Market, 19th St in the Strip.
  • BullDawgs: On the truck Tuesdays at Coffee Buddha, Thursdays at EDMC and at regular weekend round-ups around town. Follow on Twitter for locations.
  • East End Brewing Company: Opening in spring at the new Pennsylvania Market, 19th St in the Strip. And of course, the brewery at 147 Julius St in Larimer.
  • Jonathan Moran Woodworks: Opening in spring at the new Pennsylvania Market, 19th St in the Strip.
  • La Palapa: Open in the South Side at 1925 E Carson. Also operating a trailer at downtown at 7th & Penn.
  • Lengel Brothers: Soup & bread CSA till May 17; visit Facebook to sign up for summer produce CSA.
  • Ohio City Pasta Pittsburgh: Opening at Nova Place (aka Allegheny Center Mall), North Side, in the spring. Also opening a few blocks away at 26th St Market.
  • The Olive Tap: Opening in spring at the new Pennsylvania Market, 19th St in the Strip.
  • Pittsburgh Po’Boy: Food truck coming this spring.
  • Red Star Kombucha: Downtown! At 433 Graeme St, Market Square, opening in spring.
  • Steve’s Deli: Working on a Liberty Ave Bloomfield location. Check the blog for updates & pop-up events.
  • Warrior King Pastries: Re-opening in the spring at WKP flagship bakery, 114 S Market St, Ligonier.

only one thing is remarkable about the new $100+ million building - without the $5 million renovation of market square it wouldn't exist

http://www.pps.org/blog/pitts-mkt-sq-reopens/

if you want to experience a great space on market square go have a drink at poros restaurant when they have the patio doors open

It is probably worth noting the Wood Street side of the garage is supposed to get a facade treatment, which I don't think it has gotten yet. How much it will actually help remains to be seen. Note it is behind the ISDA building (which has since lost its awning) so couldn't actually have ground-floor retail entrances on that side, but it is in fact retail back there with entrances on Forbes:

First floor floorplan:

http://towertwosixty.com/wp-content/uplo...asing-Plan_REVISED-Ground-Floor-Plan.png

By the way, when you include the retail, office, and hotel portions, the garage is maybe around 30% of the total use.

Edit: Sorry, didn't realize some of these images were so big. I am changing those to links.

Looks like a lot of people are moving to the Pennsylvania Building, which is cool:

It's quite a handsome building. Much better located to the more active parts of the Strip as well, so foot traffic should be higher again (it fell like 50% when they moved out of the terminal, from what I heard from former vendors).

I presume the space is smaller than Pittsburgh Public Market? Otherwise it seems a more ideal structure in every way.

I'm not sure about overall size given the second floor, but it looks like the main difference is it is divided internally, with external storefront entrances. So for example, the new East End Brewing is basically going to be a bar now:

http://www.eastendbrewing.com/news/2016/1/15/a-new-spot-for-us-in-the-strip

So I guess it is no longer anything like a common market, but at least these are good new homes.
