W&M Construction Update - December 26th, 2015

Been too long since an update, and unfortunately this isn't a great one, but here is a photo from Boxing Day

Wallace & McDowell Construction Updated - December 26th, 2015

All concrete work is now complete, and the crane is scheduled to be taken down on Friday (January 8th).

Can't say I was too excited about a museum being there.
Agreed. Besides school children forced to go there, it would of been tumbleweeds. Excited that council is seeking better options that a modern community might care for more than a "visit once and never again" kind of place.

They passed a motion during that meeting to work with them to find a new location. How many people have even seen the North Vancouver museum and if it's less than 0.05% of the population how much relevance does it have to the cultural fabric of the city?

Holborn development, North Vancouver by chrisjohann, on Flickr

Six storeys vs the four storey woodframes you see on most of Marine is a nice visual/psychological improvement IMO.
It is named First Street West

Also, it is being developed by Fairborne not Holborn.

Location, location, location!

The North Vancouver Museum is located up on the hill, isolated from tourist areas. I'm not surprised it's not popular.

Similarly, the Vancouver Museum, the Planetarium and the Maritime Museum are all located in the middle of nowhere and not well-served by transit. Tourists and visitors find it hard to get there, when there are other things to see in the city/downtown. High density development around Kitsilanio/Cornwall area would bring about more foot traffic to that area with increased transit frequencies, potentially increasing the popularity of these museums.

Lonsdale is a great area when so many tourists already flock there daily. That would be an ideal location for a museum.

Can you give a few examples of "local history museums" in small cities attached to large cities that are successful ? By successful I mean they are well attended on a regular basis - they are busy.

Is their biggest problem their location or their collection? They want around 45-50,000 people annually to the museum. CNV/DNV population combined is 85,000. Even if they somehow manage to get every school student in the door, good luck convincing the rest of the city to come by let alone the mythical tourist that wants to learn about the history of North Vancouver.

If they believe their revenue goals and projections, then make a deal if they underperform in five years and require more money then burn their collection.
