There will be a 2nd luffer erected in the next 1-2 months using the first one. Both will follow the tower up. The first one will be external and top climbed. The 2nd crane will be internal and bottom climbed.

Anyone know why they're digging out those rectangles in the north end?

Great photos, mcminsen. Very interesting rebar scaffolding in the elevator foundation - I haven't seen that kind of thing before.

Scaffolding in the rebar? Odd.

I could imagine that the load of the cantilever requires a unusually large anchoring mass at the base of the tower that is tied into the foundation to a greater degree than we are used to seeing. The scaffolding in the rebar is likely to be used to support rebar on top, effectively creating a void that would fill with a huge amount of mass concrete. The big continuous foundation pour will be something to see!

[I'm not a structural engineer, so take what I write with a huge grain of salt.]

I saw a similar setup (rebar scaffolding) for a different project on Ingels' Instagram the other day. His caption is "concrete underpinnings":

Here's what a structural engineer friend of mine suggested.
He seems to agree with SFUVancouver's suggestion of a big mass in the middle (without much rebar) if the lateral load strength is in the periphery.

Quote:
… hard to say but with building eccentricity it looks like the lateral resistive elements may be closer to the periphery of the building footprint to maximize efficiency… and the concentrated rebar regions in the foundation act like grade beams running north south along the west side of the site and east west along the south side of the site… ie. speculating that no traditional core footing at the elevator core for resisting lateral loads – this core may possibly be gravity only or contribute minimally to lateral resistance… can’t really tell until vertical reinforcing is placed around the core – this is still absent on the photos… other vertical reinforcing dowels are also not in yet… if that’s the case then the scaffolding areas will most likely be mass poured with minimal rebar (relatively) – the scaffolding would then be in place of the typical rebar chairs that support top layer reinforcing…

The scaffolding is there to hold the top layer of rebar up. They're going to leave it in there, pour it and eat the cost of the scaffolding.

There's an object in the top left corner. Base for crane? (I'm just guessing since it's the same size as a crane base. But who knows with this lol)

It was a concrete cylinder that looks like it goes down into the rebar. There's also a hose so maybe it's removing excess water?

Thanks for the heads up. Here are some more pics from today. I looked back in the thread and saw that the first crane was not finished being erected until over a month after the first bottom section appeared.
