Hy's Ottawa location has a patio.
529 has a nice patio.
You can enjoy a steak and cheese sub at the Notre Dame Subway patio.

Forgot to post about the Edgewood Estates apartment going up, finally.

To note, that is a similar type of crane that fell in NYC last week. On a much smaller scale.

Edgewood crane is kneeled unless they are using it. I guess they don't want it falling on the existing buildings or the CPT road if there is a good wind.

I wonder how much time each day they need it, is taken up with booming up and down. I guess that down would be a slower process so they don't damage the flying jib by hitting the ground hard.

My point is that in order to keep people outside, you could have them cross OVER Portage and Main instead of having to go underground or cross at ground level. Might be a good compromise with those that have a traffic concern. Because of our wacky street layout, Portage & Main is a major hub to go through to get to other parts of the city. Without a freeway system and an efficient Rapid transit system, it would tough to reduce traffic there without causing bottlenecks elsewhere.

They used the same style crane for CMHR towards the end. i don't think it takes very long to boom up or down. Wouldn't be fast, but maybe 10-15 mins? Not a crane expert. But pretty sure it's just reeling in cable to lift the boom.

http://edgewood-estates.ca/development-project-faq/

Construction 🞵🞵🞵 site for the Edgewood apartments. Not much information on whats actually being built.

More info here.
http://akman.ca/underconstruction/edgewood-estates

224 rental units. Going by the photos, I'm estimating 12 units per floor. That's 18 floors, which sounds about right IIRC.

10 units per floor would be close to the 22 storey number.

Newspaper article in 2012 said the new Edgewood tower was suppose to be 22 stories . Not sure if that has changed since then. The contractor (Akman) says that that is a 224 unit project.

Does anyone know what is happening at 258 Burnell -- the old Canada Bread factory? I couldn't tell from Portage Ave, but it looked like a new sign was up on the side of the building.

Condos going in on Burnell. Converting the old factories. And maybe on the vacant land across the street, can't remember.

This is the last they have about it on the City of Winnipeg website...

Thanks. Any news about it's progress? I can't find much in the media, just an article from last year saying they are hoping to convert the building to condos. I haven't seen too much action around the building in a while. Hopefully it's a go, as well as the other proposed condo build on Burnell (W.E. Lofts).

Along with the proposed Palomino club condos, there seems to be a lot of interest in developing condos North of Portage in the West End recently.

Perhaps because of land values? I hope we see a lot more interest in the west end. Sargent from Edmonton to Arlington has a lot of potential; Ellice too.

Interesting. They must have just found a buyer. As recently as a month or so ago, they were still shopping those buildings to developers.

I didn't know that. Heard about those developments on SSP last year maybe and thought they were going ahead.

Downtown Subsidies etc...

I totally agree. A Vibrant healthy heart dictates and sets the tone of the entire city. Almost every successful city has a thriving downtown like we once had.
Time to get that back.
Sometimes subsidies are used to dangle the carrot to get things started as seed money.
The health of a Downtown is so important. It is what visitors feel is the pulse of the city and that is how all cities are judged. What they see will be how they report to their family friends colleagues and neighbours etc...what they witnessed.
More importantly, investors visiting, see the state of a downtown in a city and decide on how healthy the heart of the city is before deciding to spend and invest.
We are slowly turning the corner and I am glad to see it.

Even Houston has to offer incentives to fill its numerous surface lots. I want to say it will be nice when we do not need Centreventure, or so many subsidies, but that is a long way off.

The number of carrots dangled in Winnipeg in the past 50 years would keep Bugs Bunny alive until the Sun burns out.

Please tell us about the birth of incentives offered for downtown residential development 50 years ago. As far as many of us are aware, they are not so established.
