Same... after Metrotown Station gets updated, I definitely vote that Surrey Central will need to update its station. Not just for looks (because it definitely does look outdated) but for better flow and interaction with the street.

Now that I think about it, they probably won't do that until they decide what to do with this mess of a Surrey LRT idea.

Surrey Central is being upgraded with a new entrance on 103 St facing the Civic Plaza.

Report here: https://www.surrey.ca/bylawsandcouncillibrary/PLR_7915-0361-00.pdf

Aside from it needing a new entrance on this side, the rest of the station looks fine. Looks do not constantly need updating. Surrey Central is probably the most interesting and grandest of stations on the Expo line. There's a station on Berlin's U-Bahn (Eberswalde Straße) that looks very similar. Stations like this add character to a line and should be preserved.

Surrey Central has some nice architectural touches, particularly the grand coffered ceiling over the sidewalk below.

Likely so, and not just for aesthetic purposes. It would prevent stuff from falling on the tracks from above balconies. I live in the Ultra tower and there are already bags of garbage and — thrown onto the roofs of the townhouses below.

Berlin's elevated subway lines (mainly U1 and parts of U2) while very characteristic and urban, they don't make for a very nice environment to live in. Trains are noisy a and those sections are very slow due to tight turns.

Sorry for off-topic, but a former Berliner I just had to comment. I love the city.

I agree about the U-Bahn, but I love the S-Bahn Stadtbahn viaducts.

(also a former Berliner )

I've been waiting for Surrey City's 5-year capital financial plan. Finally it's posted

2016-2020
http://www.surrey.ca/bylawsandcouncillibrary/CR_2016-F002.pdf

Interesting things to note (last page of the document)

3.3.8 Performing Arts Space Feasibility and Land Acquisition
To further complement the existing Surrey Arts Centre’s 400 seat theatre and City Hall’s Centre Stage 200 seat theatre, a new performing arts space is planned in the City. Given the City’s growth and large geographic, there is demand for an additional performing arts space. This budget will support critical land acquisition. This is a multi-year project that is estimated to cost $10.7 million
The performance arts was not even mentioned on the 2015-2019 capital financial plan, so I thought the city had abandoned the plan entirely. I am glad the item is back on the table.

And 20m budget for YMCA!!! Cross referencing to YMCA's website
http://www.vanymca.org/centres/surreyfamilyYMCA.html

This whole thing sounds pretty promising

I must say i'm disappointed, but it may be necessary as glass could shatter and fall onto the tracks

Why the disappointment? That much glass in such a high place would end up looking quite dingy after a few months. The wood will at least be clean to look at from underneath.

Wood is a good choice, much better for absorbing sound.

Hopefully they add some lighting under the canopy. It would look good floodlit.

Correct me if I am wrong.

I recall seeing renderings of the new skytrain entrance having a wood finish.

Maybe that's why they choose wood to match.

Wood looks nicer especially if they are going to including some lighting.

Surrey Has always been big on wood to ever since Surrey central tower was built with all the wood beams. It seems a way to kinda keep a nature tone theme to Surrey. Also lets not forget Surrey use to be the city of parks.

heres a small list of buildings with wood being a feature in its build in surrey centre
Central city main entrance and now the old side entrance as well
City hall
Chuck bailey recreation centre
Surrey Memorial new entrance
jim pattison outpatient care and surgery centre
E division main entrance
also dont forget 3 civic plaza entrance gallery will have tons of wood in it as well

There is tons around the lower mainland as well but Surrey has really taken to push these out on projects its dealing with.

Will be a much higher quality feel than the sheet metal canopy at Plaza 88 over New West station. Looking forward to seeing what is done with the sidewalk below. Going to be a great, nice and wide covered space ideal for sidewalk patios.

Some pics from this weekend:

The only big negative about covering the canopy in wood is the units underneath it are going to be very very dark.

Seems to be picking up pace. They are working on the second and almost third floor of the residential and all within a 2 week period roughly so they are getting closer to the 1/1.5 week per floor construction speed now that they're into the residential. The hotel also seems to be closer to that pace now too.
