The new location at Metrotown is the same and has been open for some time now.

It appears that the old BestBuy building is going to be leased. There are 'building for lease' signs up on King George and 100th advertising a "Prime Retail Location".

That sign has been there for many months...they put that sign up when they knew Best Buy is moving. No one waits till the tenant moves out before putting the sign on.

Best Buy being just a show room is exactly why you go into Best Buy these days. I always take a trip to Best Buy when I am shopping around for new toys just to play with them and see how they work (like TVs, computers, monitors, etc.)

Once I am happy with what I'd like to get, I go home and shop online for the best price then order or go to wherever wins. It used to be (with Future Shop) one of the few places you could actually go see the products in showcase. NCIX moving to Surrey now on the computer front lets you play with some things, but Best Buy still has a far larger display selection for things like TVs or stereo equipment.

Heck that's why Apple Stores are so popular, because you can go play with things. As for not having a DVD selection, it isn't entirely surprising. Every time I've been in it is rare to see someone actually browsing. I'd imagine most people today when wanting to buy a DVD just order them online and for Music similar, just order things on iTunes or Amazon or something. You can still buy through Best Buy's website too and have it shipped to the store.

I just bought an external hard drive from Best Buy store. Sometime it is just convenient to get the stuff on the go than to wait for delivery. But I agree with you on larger purchases.

Has anyone ever tried those "Price Match" services that Best Buy and many others offer? They should be giving you the sale for the same price as on Amazon etc. but getting it right away. Never tried it in practise, but I would think it is still enticing to many people (in case it works just as they advertise).

I did a price match with Best Buy, but the store I was matching was the Microsoft Store. The cashier did it by googling the MS Store price on her phone, and then adjusting the price. You only get 10% of the difference, which is almost nothing. But it's pretty convenient if it's something you want to touch and see first.

10% of the difference? That's not matching the price in my books.

They beat it by 10% of the difference, meaning you will get it price matched plus a 10% discount on the difference between their price and the competitor's price, ensuring you get it at the lowest price possible.

I've done it with the Source. The Source though requires whatever place you try to price match with to have an actual retail location. So they will not match prices from purely Internet electronics stores, or places like Amazon for example. When I bought my TV I found a retailer in Ontario that had it for $800 off the sticker price. The Source was the only one with the Samsung 8000 series TV which is what I wanted so they begrudgingly matched and beat by 10% the price of the Ontario store.

And I do mean begrudgingly. The manager at one point even commented along the lines of "I have no idea how they can make money at that price, we just lost money on this sale."

Ah, that's actually pretty good when you consider that you get the product right away.

That —, as the competition in all price matching cases are online stores. I think Best Buy matches some of the most common online retailers like Amazon.ca (which actually is not very competitive vs. Amazon.com).

the coquitlam centre best buy is set up like that, lots of brand dedicated sections. It is indeed a much nice experience.

years ago i saw a TV at best buy for $799 and the same tv at future shop was $899, so they matched it to $799 plus $10 off!

they just look up the online price from my experience doing the price match thing.

When i bought my camera a few years ago at future shop, i had seen the same one at costco which was in a bundle/package, which included a bag, memory card and some extra things and i told the guy at futureshop what they were selling it for and he made up a package with what he could including a better memory card and gave me a better price than costco without ever looking anything up, i just said i saw it for X price.

Can put this down as a rumour.. but I overheard the manager at Starbucks in the mall today saying that his kiosk and the area surrounding it will be undergoing a major renovation soon.

Good news if this is true.. that area needs some updating. Hopefully this is a sign that they could be re-opening the closed cooridor and adding more stores.

For those not familiar, the Starbucks kiosk is in the centre of the mall as shown below:

Surrey Central has all of the big box stores now. They just need to add some quality clothing stores.

Was in the new Wal Mart today. Nice big grocery section and all self-serve check-outs at the exit I left through upstairs. Not sure about downstairs.
