660 units per acre / 1630 units per hectare... that must be some of the highest site density in Ottawa... and these buildings are only about 55 feet wide.
Dirienzos is going to have to expand....seriously.... hundreds of broke hungry students next door to the best cheap eats in the city world, and in a neighborhood with no grocery options???
The closeness of Soho and Envie is puzzling to say the least and shows what happens when there's inadequate planning. Maybe this kind of thing is unavoidable in midtown Manhattan or even downtown Toronto, but in Ottawa's Little Italy where you basically have a clean canvas? If I were a Soho owner I'd be pissed and looking to sell asap.
The sad thing is that the curved glass facade is the nicest of the SOHO's sides, and would have been nice facing the park. What a waste of floor to ceiling windows that were supposed to take advantage of the southern sunlight exposure views of downtown and the Gatineau hills. It's too bad these buildings couldn't switch places!

Currently under construction is Phase 1, a 28 storey student-oriented high-rise residential rental building. A revised site plan application has been submitted for Phase 2, a 25 storey condominium also geared towards student lifestyles. In total, there will be 540 dwelling units.
This application requests to permit the following ground floor uses: Retail Food Store, Convenience Store, Personal Service Business, and limited Retail Store as ancillary uses. The application also proposes reductions in parking rates given that these are purpose-built student oriented buildings, as well as variances in the private-approaches by-law and driving aisle width.
^ Meh, I think this one is pretty spot on actually. Seeing the comparison side-by-side, seems like although not a very nice looking building, they are delivering exactly what they promised (unlike that Hyatt disaster in the market).
I find the whole thing very disturbing actually. What is most annoying is the contrasts... at least in the render the brown is very light, and the "white" and "black" glass provides a somewhat aesthetic effect.
In the real building, all 3 of those colours just seem to blend in with each other and it looks like a monolith...
Speaking of SOHO, I wonder why they decided to put balconies on the north side of the tower, instead of the south side where there is obviously more sun.
I like this project. I don't think it's beautiful, in fact I think it would be ugly on it's own, but I believe it will be a nice contrast in the future sea of glass towers.
