Exploring court buildings tonight (we're planning on replacing ours in the near future - not tearing it down, but building a new, modern one elsewhere). So... province name, plus "Supreme Court". May not be accurate for ones I don't know, but it's what comes up.

That's 'cause you didn't have the right name.

The highest court is this and sits in the two main cities, in the Montreal building you see on that page and this Quebec City building on the edge of the lower town (while previously they were in this (nicer) one which is now occupied by the Ministry of Finance.

(If you do a 180 in the above view you'll see the neighbor across the street is a well known building.)

This is an unrelated comment, but it looks to me like Maillou House, across from the courthouse in Quebec City, has metal shutters. I was just reading about them in a little blog posting about urban fires and fire suppression rules.

Up close example:

Original article

At one point in time these were required by building codes in downtown Halifax, as was masonry construction (presumably Quebec City had similar rules). Not many of these have survived up until today.

Here's the old NS courthouse. The Supreme Court of NS sat here starting in 1860, then moved to the concrete bunker in the 1960's:

^ We'd be more able to appreciate the architecture with a wintertime picture...

And yep, that place indeed seems to still have metal shutters. Pretty rare here too. (FYI, that house predates the July 1749 founding of Halifax -- it's from 1737. But the shutters are a lot newer.)

Yes, they are a 19th century thing. I don't there was much in the way of large-scale ironworks in the 1700's. Iron shutters in 1737 Quebec City would have cost a fortune, and they would have rusted away by now had the owners not been very diligent over the centuries.

I've got a picture from another angle:

Just joking. It doesn't seem to be very well-photographed though.

The most interesting feature of the building is the detailing on the facade:

Another digression, but here it is in its wider setting. This picture simultaneously shows what's neat about the city and how shabby it can be. There used to be a stone staircase up to the church and it's just gone now. From some reason they installed suburban arterial road style street lighting in the 70's.

There is a soulfulness in that funkified row of brick shops leading to what looks like a government building or an apartment block. This kind of thing really speaks to me, as we all have individual orientations or preferences based on childhood environments, and I'm no different. Though I'm trying to identify what makes this vista distinctively Maritime to the Ontario eye, and I think what I've come up with is the grass embankment. Such a nice row of shops like that in a town or city here would probably not be right next to the gracious grounds of a large church, but would tend to be smack dab in the middle of a non-ecclesiastical commercial district.

I find it impossible to contemplate the prospect of living far away from streets like this.
