The underground parcade will be under both the hotel and condo as I believe they said they were building both parkades together. I dont know about the plaza however. I guess that means they will have to do the pilings for both structures at the same time.

Will the pilings need to be different depths for different heights? Feel free to answer in the River Landing thread.

Some Starbucks news for the province: two locations in Saskatoon should be opening in spring: Stonebridge and Preston crossing, while two more locations elsewhere in the province should be opening later this year (no idea where those are yet, but I have some ideas…)

There WILL be one in the SE part of the province; however I'm not obliged to say anything as it hasn't been made public yet.

I've got independent reports (aka rumours) one is going in Weyburn, similar to the one they've got out in Swift Current. Though I suppose this should go in the general Sask talk.

I was hoping for Estevan as I'm more often in that area, though Weyburn is close. I was thinking Lloyd for the other location but have no evidence for it.

In other franchise news: this morning a sign went up at Clarence and circle heading south toward Stonebridge, for a Boston Pizza "opening soon". Is there a Stonebridge location I've missed, or is this for the renovated BP On 8th?

Lloyd has two Starbuckses already, one in the Safeway and a freestanding one further west. I'd speculate on Yorkton for the next one. A lot of chains out there, but with resource prices dropping it's not as sure of a bet as it was a couple years ago.

Moose Jaw could use a little Starbucks love. Safeway has the only one, and they don't accept any reward redemptions on Birthdays or the 12 stars.

However, I've come to much prefer the coffee at Common Cafe on main st. They use Phil and Sebastian coffee out of Calgary, and it's one of the best cappuccinos I've had.

I would have assumed Moose Jaw had a Starbucks already (aside from the Safeway one), that is surprising. I'll be sure to step into Common next time I'm in town though.

This reminds me, on the subject of coffee houses, Broadway Roastery is opening a third location in the mini mall on Gray Avenue off Central Ave in Sutherland area. Should be a welcome addition to the neighbourhood.

Unrelated to Starbucks, it was announced a couple years ago that Martensville was supposed to get a Second Cup. Those plans fell through and apparently they're getting a Blenz Coffee, which would be a first for the province.

Perhaps we're looking at a Saskatchewan coffee explosion.

Saskatoon 'logical' place for Ikea expansion, developer says

It is “logical” to assume that Ikea will consider a store in Saskatoon as part of its decade-long expansion project, which is expected to double its Canadian store count, a prominent developer says.

“Will you get one? I think it’s quite probable. I think there’s strong interest and this is a prime market and I would say they likely would be identifying this as an opportunity,” said Josh Kaufman, Dream Development’s vice president of retail and commercial development.

In January, Ikea Canada unveiled plans to build a 328,000-square-foot store in Halifax, the first of 12 it plans to erect across Canada over the next 10 years. According to 2011 census data, Halifax is home to about 390,000 people, making it the country’s largest census metropolitan area (CMA) without an Ikea. The next-biggest CMAs without an Ikea within reasonable driving distance: Victoria, B.C. at 345,000, followed by Saskatoon at 261,000 and Regina at 211,000.

Kaufman declined to say whether Dream Development has struck a deal with the furniture powerhouse, but noted that his company’s Holmwood development west of Highway 5 will be the largest “regional centre” in Saskatoon and will draw tenants looking to expand into Saskatchewan.

Kaufman said “every tenant, including (Ikea), will be a prime candidate for this site.”

Ikea Canada declined multiple interview requests. In an emailed statement, the company’s corporate press officer Stephanie Kerr said it “wouldn’t be fair” to comment since all of the company’s new locations are under negotiations, and that “at this time, there are no plans to open a store in Saskatoon.”

The furniture giant’s plan to double its Canadian store count has reignited rumours that a Saskatoon store could be on the horizon. Apart from the Holmwood sector, there are several places where it — or other major big box stores — could be located.

Second Cup is one of the worst franchises I've ever dealt with. Its not surprising they are quickly losing the coffee war in Canada.

Famed architect to attend opening of Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre

Every feature of a new aboriginal student centre at the University of Saskatchewan is meant to embrace diversity and life, according to renowned indigenous architect Douglas Cardinal.

Cardinal, who designed the Gordon Oakes Red Bear Student Centre, will be there to witness the grand opening of the space he envisioned as a sculpture growing out of the ground.

“The people are anchored to the earth, and I wanted that to be powerfully expressed by the building,” he said.

Known for designing the Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Que. and the First Nations University in Regina, Cardinal will be among the dignitaries present for the grand opening of the student centre Wednesday.

In addition to the scheduled speeches and tours, Juno-award winning singer Susan Aglukark will perform. The family of the late Gordon Oakes will also be at the reception, which will include an opening prayer by his son Larry.

Senator Lillian Dyck will be giving a presentation on Thursday

Cardinal said the design nuances of the centre are meant to educate.

“If you stand directly in the centre you see openings in the four directions as well as to the sky and to the heavens,” he said. “The elders wanted to be able to have ceremonies in the space, so that they could sit somewhere where they could be connected to the universe.”

A cylinder of earth below the building is meant to connect people in the space to the earth, in spite of the tunnels beneath the floor. Cardinal said every detail has been scrutinized, from the amount of light let into a stairwell to the bathrooms, which were designed for unisex use.

It is great looking building a real possessive addition to the campus.

I find the Star Phoenix article just weird. It more about the architect coming to town than this great building.
