And I live in the west end.

Yeah, as someone who lives in Parkdale the combination of the two would actually do wonders in relieving transit in the west end in the short / intermediate term. SmartTrack in particular will make commuting from Liberty Village to downtown much easier and take a ton of pressure off the King streetcar.

Does anyone know why the subway extension was not extended further to Vaugne Mills? Given the size of the mall and the recent development, and the fact that it is a major transfer point, it would make sense.

That area is way too low density for a subway,it shouldnt have even been extended to vaughn corporate center (an entirely political decision by the fed government of that time).

I'm shocked that RT hasnt been seriously looked at, especially with all the money being poured into these transit studies. Theres an extensive ravine system from Victoria Park station all that way up to the Science Center, perfect for an aboveground RT. That covers 60% of the entire distance of the proposed downtown relief line. A RT DTR from St Andrew Stn -) King Stn->Vic Park Stn->Fairview Mall with frequent service would be an affordable solution and huge difference maker for Toronto's congested system.
I'm not. I'm glad it somewhat worked out for the Metro Vancouver but, that doesn't make it a great tech or as affordable as you think. Construction costs aren't everything and capacity limitations would be a serious issue. I also see the irony in being constantly reminded how a 6 lane elevated expressway is the biggest scourge on the city yet an elevated lrt down Eglinton, etc. or, of all things, Taylor Creek is perfectly acceptible.

I do believe the subway in Vaughan will end up paying off but, yeah, made a fortune for Calloway REIT ( now Smart REIT)

It's unfortunate that the Vaughan subway plan materialized before GO RER became a thing. If GO RER had been on table 10 years ago, they would probably would have extended to York University and just stopped it there, given that the RER line into Vaughan could stop only a few hundred metres east of the future Vaughan subway station.

Kingston Transit reported that in 2015, its ridership increased by 11%. This follows a 13% ridership increase in 2014 and a 6% ridership increase in 2013, for a total increase of 33% in just three years.

Implementing BRT-lite is really paying off.

Isn't that BRT-lite just a bus that skips some stops?

What sets the BRT-lite system (called Kingston Express) from standard bus routes:

1) Wider stop spacing than regular transit, generally around 800m or so
2) Routes travel in straight lines along arterials; no diversions into off-street terminals (with one exception at the Cat Centre, but it's on a through route) or into neighbourhoods
3) Use of a dedicated subfleet of buses with their own livery. Express vehicles also have a seating configuration intended for higher capacity (more aisle seating, less row seating)
4) Transit priority measures; right now this consists solely of dynamic traffic light timing at a handful of traffic lights, but things like queue jump lanes are planned but keep getting delayed (this is my one irritant with the situation)

John Baird luncheon, reaffirmed the forthcoming absolutely massive... upwards of $100 billion... infrastructure spending with the majority of that expected to be big city mass transit.

Interesting tidbit but I have to ask: in what capacity was John Baird speaking to a Trudeau government initiative?!

Okay, so currently a tiny bit better than Hamilton's B-Line (last I road it).

Here's a cool new image showing current tunnelling progress of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT. Apparently they are starting to stage some of the equipment for station construction as well, with some stations beginning construction in April. It's (slowly) coming together!
