9 Canadian Travel Destinations That Rival U.S. Hot Spots

Wish you could go hipster-ing in Brooklyn? Hit Hamilton instead

Ontario’s once blue-collar city is being compared to New York’s Brooklyn—which turned its likewise industrial past into a hipster hotbed of arts and culture—for good reason. You can gorge on ridic tasty tacos at The Mule, then throw back bourbons at the Baltimore House. Too many bourbons? Sip a bring-you-back-to-life smoothie at the vegan-friendly Democracy and then saunter over to the Hundred Dollar Gallery to check out the art.

Not sure which is more wince-making: "Hipster" as a verb or the hermetic micro-tour (scratch the side-trip to Democracy/Locke South and you're left with a four-block orbit — and two of those three destinations are located immediately next door to each other in the conjoined Empire Times building. Brooklyn is slightly more spacious and populous — it occupies an area 3 times that of the old city (Ward 1-8 combined) and by the mid-1870s had a population comparable to all of current Hamilton — with any luck, we'll match their 1880 population in another decade).

It's all part of the ongoing Brooklynization of Hamilton. Forget art... Brooklynism and Hipsterism are the "New Steel"

I think Hamilton's better competitive advantage lies with the waterfalls...

I don't consider Hamilton to have appreciably more "hipsters" than other southern Ontario cities (and I live near Locke). When I hear about how "Brooklyn-like" Hamilton is becoming, the pessimist in me assumes that whoever is saying that thinks Hamilton must not have a lot else going for it. Go to SoHo (ugh) in London or downtown Guelph, and it's at least as "hipsterish" as even James North or Locke South.

Yeah, because naming their river 'The Thames' and calling the city 'London' wasn't lame enough.

Yeah, that is awful how they've come up with a portmanteau out of two words ("South of Horton"). Really cringeworthy. There's only one Soho, it's the most famous nightlife district in the world, and it is spelled properly, with just one capital letter in it.

And it's in the real London. No offence against London, Ontario, but really, c'mon..."SoHo"?

Though people embracing this "Hamilton as Brooklyn" tripe should really be hung from a coat rack by their tribal ear hoops.
