I am also being pessimistic (surprise, surprise) about it too, and I voiced my concerns there last night.

I find it highly dubious that they expect the private land owner to build a patio in the back, taking away their valuable parking stalls, when the City has shown a willingness to give up their parking stalls in the front of the building for a minimal charge. If the City doesn't allow Correnthia's (or however you spell it) to have a patio in the front, they just won't have a patio.

Other than back patios for Boon or Corrientes, I'm not sure what more you could get from John Hirsch. The north side is all commercial and a surface lot. And the south side is the Ashdown parkade at one end and a surface lot at the other end (with Boon and Corrientes in between).

Would like to see the streetscape wrap around Pacific and Alexander to add opportunity for the great spaces on South side of Alexander. The new Peg Brewery will also have a great patio onto Lily as this is all private property.

I have always said Lily will become the front door of the East Exchange.

If we can get city to expand their mandate onto George, Edwin and Duncan on the North side of Eatons /Nutty Club there are some huge development proposals softly in th works.

I feel like if some development is set to happen there the city would have no problem finding the funding to do streetscaping around there. But as it is right now, it'd be a huge waste of money (at least in terms of there are other streets that deserve it first).

Multi unit stacked townhouse residental rental.

Lighting and Infastructure Support Facility for Film and Entertainment.

Sports Shed, an 18,000ft2 multi use facility to augment the New Sports Manitoba building.

Coffee roaster facility and warehousing.

All planned from Alexander, Edwin, Duncan, Galt to Waterfront to Gomez to Higgins...

So yes, some city infastructure and streetscaping would be warranted...

Which is the Eaton's warehouse? God it woulda been crazy to be here in the early 1900s when 2 companies owned all of Winnipeg.

The single story brown brick building where Nutty Club is located at Galt Ave and Lily St. Sort of unique stonework on the building as the old Eaton logo (an E in a Diamond) is in each corner of the building on Lily St.

While I agree it's a great building, my hope is this does not happen for a very, very long time.


It is absolutly full with people and machines packaging confectionary and creating employment. (Nutty Club). They are actually only the second business in the structure since it was built!

The same is true for Great West Metal on Alexander. Where else can you get a steel garbage can or wine bucket made in Manitoba.

Its a gift to still have factories that make stuff in the core of the city. Vita Foam on Waterfront Drive is another absolutly incredible factory weaving material for bedding on huge machines working around the clock! They all employ regular folks who support their family and take the bus. If the buildings can be repurposed for manufacturing type of businesses first, this in my mind is best for the area. Goodness knows we have almost enough people in black who give up comfort for fashion freezing on the streets!

It's actually two storeys with a third floor on the Easterly end of the building. The amount of concrete in the structure is very impressive. I think the metal silos are still on the roof of the building for sun flower seed and bird feed.

A neighborhood with various business concerns is ideal. I want to see building owners invest in their buildings though. Just because your business is industrial, that does not mean your building and grounds must look grungy and derelict.

In other cities, such wasteland would have been transformed into a vibrant community by now. In Winnipeg, slight discussion is had, projects get shelved for decades, then perhaps a new, government-funded, atrocious building is constructed. Such patterns must cease, and it will take a conglomerate to see this area become transformed into a stunning, mixed-use community.

On Canada Cartage, I generally don't want businesses to vacate the city centre, but I support anything that results in fewer semis pounding their way through downtown Winnipeg. (I wish there was some way to ban the grain trucks that clog downtown streets at rush hour...10x worse than pedestrian activity at Portage and Main if you ask me)

And the fact that it opens this desirable plot of land up for redevelopment is a nice plus too.

Fortunately for you, you do not live in a progressive city in which thousands of people long to live in and near downtown. As a result, the industrial blight you seem to support is safe.
