Me too, I threw in a comment saying the new line should turn onto sw 1st from Lincoln and go underground after it passes 405. Then have a station at ohsu and then b-line to the barbur tc before it comes out of the ground.

Unfortunately, that option (OHSU tunnel) has already been looked at and rejected.

Just completed the survey myself. I strongly suspect that they've already decided to go with the sort of BRT Lite that Trimet is proposing for Powell. But I hope to be proven wrong.

I strongly suspect that Tigard and Tualatin are not going to settle for BRT-lite. Contrary to the anomolous special election results of '14, Tigard is actually VERY pro light rail and have done extensive planning to accommodate future mass transit. This is the last major leg of the MAX system and if Metro tries to pass off a glorified bus as High Capacity Transit, there's gonna be a massive uproar.

If they want this to be successful, they have to build light rail. The middle/upper middle class people that they're targeting to ease congestion on Barbur aren't going to ride busses.

I have to agree, anything less than light rail is just gonna be an overpriced copout. That section of Portland would do wonders with light rail running through it.

Are you saying we should remove the MAX from Gresham, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Milwaukee and Clackamas?

Light rail is exactly the solution to bringing the suburbs to the urban center. Commuter rail is more appropriate for further away metros, such as Salem. A streetcar would be a great solution up Hawthorne.

I agree, a commuter rail would be best for running out to Salem and places further out like that. Light rail should be used to connect the city to the rest of the metro, and streetcars and buses should be used for within the city and local commutes (express buses being an exception.)

all those lines are in porrtland, except hillsburo and gresham. commuter rail would go from from vancouver to canby or willsonvill. the metro is really hilly though. it could go along the river but people with the nice houses wouldnt like that.

Why aren't the Hillsboro and Gresham lines in Portland but the Milwaukie, Clackamas and Beaverton routes are?

I will be incredibly disappointed if light rail is not chosen to service this corridor. I agree that a fancy bus line will not coax car owners to switch to transit the way light rail would.

The city could just build a Dirigible Rapid Transit system to circumvent the hills. You could start with a Scapoose-Damascus line and expand from there.

Minus the butchering of Hillsboro, I actually have to agree with you in the sense that there needs to be a massive expansion of light rail throughout the west side of the metro. Adding a new line through the SW corridor would help give a new route to run future lines through.

This. Those busses are still going to be sitting in traffic. If I had to choose between sitting in traffic in my own car or sitting in traffic on a bus, I'd choose my car every time.

if portland was in japan, i think there would be light rail all along i205 and i5 and they would connect and be the same line in a circle. there would be longer trains and there would be free parking for bikes and scooters/ motorcycles.

Um, if Portland was in Japan, we'd have bullet trains to Seattle, Vancouver, SF, LA, SLC, Denver. We'd also have subways throughout the city and quadruple the population and density.

We'd also have a full blown subway system in Portland (and every other city) with a huge suburban, all-day commuter rail connecting every suburb to its city.

I can't wait for these billion dollar rail systems to be built to southern Oregon so 6 people can ride it everyday.
