^ don't feel bad.. I've met plenty of engineers that have a hard time understanding this stuff, or more specifically how it works

Thanks for the updates Dave. It really is a bit of a shame Kelly doesn't have much of a presence unless you are within a block distance, beautiful building. The COE Tower glass is more and more intriguing as well. Can't wait to see it complete, might turn out real nice. I predict a lot of nay-sayers changing their minds.

New plans, partnerships and attitude for improved Northlands

Northlands is now negotiating with old enemies and rivals to better run Edmonton’s convention business and to convert Hall D at Edmonton Expo Centre into a new 5,000 seat arena/concert hall.

Also in the works for Northlands is a plan to convert Rexall Place into a nerve centre for minor hockey and to redevelop the entire Northlands grounds, which includes a huge racetrack and grandstand for the failing horse-racing industry.

But the most important change is one of attitude and governance.

“When I first joined the board, they were always trying to figure out what’s best for Northlands and how we’re going to keep Northlands whole … Now, they’re actually fully committed to do what’s best for the city,” says Coun. Michael Oshry, a Northlands board member.

Northlands, a non-profit society, was founded in 1879 and took over the lucrative arena and horse racing businesses in the early 1990s. But with the opening of the new downtown arena and with Rexall Place closing, Northlands will lose $9 million in profit per year from lost concert revenue, Oshry says.

Northlands has new, younger shareholders and a new president, Tim Reid, pushing for change. But economics forced the matter. “Northlands had a cash cow with the concert business and it’s changed, so now they’re in a situation where they’re financially not sustainable without help from the city. They’ve got to reinvent themselves,” Oshry says.

For decades, the Northlands board was seen as a secretive old boys’ club, beneficiaries of the city’s concert and horse racing gravy train. When Oshry joined the board, he found it “very dysfunctional.”

To change, Northlands still must accept that most of its 18-member board will now be appointed by the city government, instead of chosen by its 300 private shareholders.

“It became a popularity contest to become a board member rather than based on experience and expertise to run a $100-million organization,” Oshry says. “You ended up getting some people who were good and some people who weren’t qualified.”

The city does a good job picking people for other major public boards, Oshry says. “When you’ve got an organization that is that complex and that in need of transition, and going through some significant changes, you need extremely qualified people.”

Stadium LRT area revitilization a ‘go’

An open house was held Thursday night by the city to bring community members up to speed and collect ideas from the public regarding a planned revamp of the area surrounding the Stadium Station.

Some 80 Edmontonians were in attendance, and Acting Director of Planning and Design Erik Backstrom says the preliminary plans were well received.

“The idea of actually capitalizing better on the LRT infrastructure that they’ve had in their neighborhood for a long time, and taking some of these under-utilized industrial areas and turn them into residential areas with coffee shops and that kind of thing, people really like.”

Backstrom says one of the more attractive features is the new ‘Main Street.’

Meeting was well attended, and the concept plans look very very good. I expect that once this start building out it will be a very attractive area. And yes Brookfield is committed to the ground work for Muttart and will develop the area in partnership with other developers

I used to get that attitude as a Balancer. no one actually knew what we did, we just created paperwork.

As a consultant now I get introduced as the Tame Balancer. I'm house broken I am not Tame.

When I was Balancing YYC the JCI guys gave me the software to balance all the VAVs with a Palm Pilot, Most of the controls guys I dealt with from JCI, Seimens, ESC were great to work with.

Yeah that little HVACPro tool was great. I may or may not have accidentally kept a copy on a zip drive and downloaded it onto an old laptop so that I can commission boxes here at City Centre

Speaking of JCI.. Sounds like a huge merge and they're now rolled up into Tyco's empire. Too bad for Milwaukee.. That's going to be a huge loss for that city

Any insight as to where it's going? Hopefully west and south of it's current location.

The budget numbers they're throwing around are unreal.. $2.4 billion or so

I've done a ton of hospital work and used to how much that type of work costs, and that figure amazes even me

I can't really fathom how one hospital costs 4-5 hockey arenas. I get they're not the same thing, but still.

You should see the infrastructure that goes into a modern hospital. Triple redundant systems, full interstitial floors, the mechanicals just for the specific systems like med gas and R/O water are huge, plus power requirements at something like 50 watts psf

Then add 100% outdoor air systems with full heat recovery with media that needs to be anti-bacterial & anti-radiation, full on hepa and infrared filtration, etc etc, it adds up fast

Still blows my mind though.. You could build 2 bow towers for the same price as what's being proposed

^You'd have to see the budget, but hospitals, depending on what they include have a whole bunch of requirements from vaults for things like linear accelerators (although that is over at the university), bio-hazard materials, specialized lifts. I'd love to see all the design considerations and budgets of it. I wonder if equipment improvements would be part of the budget because that could be some frightening numbers.
