I hope this isn't an accurate updated rendering of 220 CPS . .
Can't imagine Robert Stern did this change . .
like it's turned into a blunt horizontal element . . even darker . .
in stark contrast to an even lighter stone color below . . cheap corrugated metal ? . .
no vertical lines from below lacing up through the horizontals of the setbacks . .
no longer a ceremonial fenestration (window placement) on the top 7 floors . .
this couldn't be an official rendering . .

Is there a render that looks like what they're building?

Well, let me throw this out for consideration:

1. The article in question from where this render was taken dealt with multiple examples of NYC's wholesale skyline change; and

2. It would seem to make sense to me that a building project already slated to hit the sky would have all its finer points already finished: IOW: Why the need for a design change, especially since no news has emerged from Mr. Stern's office apropos of the matter?

If we see another "dumbed down" design like this coming officially from the Stern camp, then I'll believe it.

Isn't that showing the backside (south) of the tower?

of course referring to the dowdy chapeau . .
and utterly lax fenestration in the preeminent position . .
topping off this otherwise blue-chip tower . .

To be fair, I don't think that is an official rendering. It's the site's own rendering of what they have seen I think, in order to fit it with the other buildings. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'm hopeful I'm not haha!

Theres a sort of intricate genius psychosis like train of though, and I think it adds so much. His word play is unique. I can only imagine how it would manifest if he dropped 300mcg. He would become the Haiku, and the haiku would evoke the rich smells of NYC, and the colors of Central Park. Point being, if artspook ever visits the land of Colorado, with the handy assistant available, him and his little helper can create magic when it comes to writing. I wish he posted more frequently. I love reading his posts. The way he describes buildings kinda creates a sort of motion when thinking about it. Via his word play, you can get an idea of how it curves and looks, without even seeing a picture.

Final Renderings For 220 Central Park South Show Slight Design Changes

Quote:
Back in May of 2015, YIMBY posted renderings from SLCE Architects featuring the Robert A.M. Stern Architects-designed 220 Central Park South. Since then, construction on the building has made major headway, with the structure now reaching past its tenth floor, and now we can post the building’s final look, thanks to an ad placed by developer Vornado in REBNY’s new booklet.

While no formal renderings have previously been released by the developer, an illicit video leaked in early 2014, and the follow-up images from SLCE and the documents filed with the Department of Buildings confirmed that changes to what was depicted in the video would not be dramatic.

In any case, modifications since the last round of renderings show balconies are now present along much of the tower’s northern side, facing Central Park.

This is also the first full rendering for The Villas, which will consist of 13 enormous units in the smaller building directly fronting on Central Park South. That part of the development will be very contextual to the existing CPS street wall, fitting in snugly between its neighbors. The Villas seem to employ a more terrace-centric concept to the outdoor space compared to the tower units.

220 Central Park South has not yet pierced the Midtown plateau, but units have already been selling for mind-boggling and record-breaking prices. The 18,000 square-foot penthouse atop the tower is reportedly selling for $200 million, and the tower has 160 condos in total.

The entire project will rise 66 floors and 950 feet to its pinnacle, placing it a good 600 feet below the future 217 West 57th Street, which is also under construction, with the Nordstrom’s floors also now rising above the street line.

Completion is anticipated for 2017.

It looks very nice. And iirc they will use real limestone, so this one could be a stunner.

MUCH better than before. I really like the added little balconies as they give more texture and depth to this tower, letting it blend in more with Hampshire and Essex houses.

It looks pretty good.

I still wish it were maybe 100 ft. taller, to give it a bit more skyline presence, but in any case this is still very good, and the limestone and lavish design will probably be stunning.

Looks amazing. Was the jut out on the east side part of the original plan?

Now that's what I'm talking about! I always thought the original design was terrible, the refined design will have a great presence on the skyline! I agree with lakegz, it will compliment Essex and the Hampshire nicely, how exciting will it be to see this baby rise!

Just to pick nits a bit about The Villas... I'm not sure at all why they decided to pull back away from the lot line streetwall above the 6th floor or so and instead aline with 210 CPS, a regrettable midcentury structure which sits 15-20' back from the historic streetwall—the only building to do so on CPS. This decision also leaves thr awkward exposed (possibly skinned in some manner) sidewall of 222 CPS. I don't understand what the motivation for this could have possibly been, especially considering it no doubt reduced square footage. If this was some attempt at being contextual, what a poor decision to follow 210 CPS' lead at screwing up what should be a common sense aesthetic decision to honor the historic CPS lot line streetwall.

The zoning requires setbacks, and there's no net loss of square footage. And in any case, if you lined up the building with the prewar on the right, you would have the same issues you raised, just on the other end of the building.

Yes, but I think it to be likely that 210 is eventually replaced or radically renovated, whereas 222 not so much. With this even if 210 is replaced or renovated which alters its streetwall frontage, 220 will have a somewhat strange setback that is reflected in no other structure on CPS.
