^ Yeah, Delta is crazy deep. It's strange how they're such an outlier in that regard.

The water table is high in Manhattan, yet the original WTC complex was built using a slurry wall around the entire facility and had several levels of underground parking.

Just because there is a high water table doesn't make underground parking impossible. Just more expensive.

Looking at Parr's 1874 map (link below), there doesn't appear to be anything running through the site that would later have been buried, so as you mentioned you might be confused with Colony Creek. That being said, nothing appearing on the map doesn't preclude the presence of 'natural' underground creeks that could run through the site.

FYI, while it looks like the area is already built up in the map, those were actually just subdivided empty lots for the most part in the HBC reserve. For another example of the speculation, look at the subdivison to the north (right on the map) where the CPR yards ended up.

Thanks for the link. Exactly what I was talking about on the last page. Cost might be too high here to make it feasible.

Thanks again! That's quite the structure they have there. Bathtub survived 9/11 as well, with some anchors as shown in one of the photos.

I have a pdf copy of the exterior elevations & building sections drawings from Perkins + Will Arch. from Vancouver dated Dec. 1, 2015 and I can only see two level of U/G parking. I just don't know how to upload them.

Oooh! You can't upload PDF's I don't think. You'd have to convert them to images, load them onto some form of internet hosting service (ie: photobucket) and then post them using the link and the little photo icon (yellow button).

I'd be willing to help or do it for you!

You can put the PDF on a public file sharing site like Dropbox and link it here, no need to convert it to images.

I think the reason most Winnipeg developments set a limit of two levels of underground parking as the surface footprint of the structure is large enough that two levels meet most of the needs for the building. The one exception would be the RBC Convention Centre and neighbouring Carlton Square (Delta Hotel). That project well predates me but I think the vision there was that for whatever reason the Convention Centre would intentionally have more limited parking but to offset that Carlton Square would have more spaces. It is actually interesting how around level 5 and 6 it actually expands beyond the footprint at the levels closer to the surface. The larger lot under Carlton Square could have been a concession back at the time to help secure a hotel for the site. Also from memory a lot of the top levels of parking are reserved for residential tenants of the Holiday Towers.

they just used the existing basement for parking. Most buildings downtown are that deep for mechanical services etc.

interestingly a major cause of this is the closure of the Canada packers site....it used to draw so much water that it lowered the water table in the city.
That's what I said but he said they've been able to find a way to make it work.

The parking in the CityPlace basement is an interesting story. What I heard is Hydro couldn't put enough parking under its own building due to site conditions. Hydro then snatched the basement lease at CityPlace away from MPI that was using it as storage. In response MPI then bought CityPlace to control its own space downtown but the Hydro parking had to stay until the lease expires...

That's hilarious, I'm not surprised. Makes me wonder if maybe Hydro and TN made a deal for some parking at TNS. Park across the street and will probably still be able to get there indoors.
