That's assuming that they aren't simply adding additional stores to large markets currently served by only one or two stores and capable of supporting more. No guarantees that either of the Sask cities will get a store, though it would seem probable.

True, but looking at their current locations I can't see how they will add ten more stores to major markets. They seem to follow a general rule that there's one store for a million people, so the only places I can see them adding more stores are Montreal, Vancouver and either Scarborough or Markham. Even then, a Saskatchewan store should be a shoe-in before they decide to move away from that and add more stores to cities like Calgary.

Does anyone know where to find a future land use map for the land between Martensville and Warman?

I thought something had been drawn up but I cannot find it on the Warman or Martensville websites.

Edit: I found it.

I know Martensville is currently redrafting their growth plan. The one they have been following was only meant to take the city to 10,000 and I think they are sitting at 9,300 (Warman's apparently at 10,500).

U of S building consensus for architecture school

January 26, 2016

Quote:
SASKATOON – The University of Saskatchewan (U of S) is part of a province-wide collective examining the feasibility of starting a School of Architecture in Saskatchewan.

“Saskatchewan is the only province west of the Maritimes without a school of architecture,” said Ryan Walker, associate professor of regional and urban planning at the U of S. “The loss of potential students to out-of-province programs and the contracting of services to out-of-province firms are limiting both cultural development and economic growth.”

Walker, a member of the Saskatchewan School of Architecture Initiative along with representatives of various allied academic disciplines and the Saskatchewan Association of Architects, said the first step in the process is to consult with a wide range of stakeholders, from the campus community to members of the architecture, development, construction and design industries, to the general public and other interested parties.

“We began examining the creation of a program in architecture in 2008,” explained Walker, adding that as part of the initial phase of enquiry, a sample academic program was created. “Where we are at today is exploring the idea that if we had a School of Architecture in Saskatchewan, what would it look like?”

The provincial economic impact of the program, he continued, was studied in detail and the initiative was included in the university’s Operations Forecast submitted to government.

“The university has since provided seed funding for the creation of the position of project director and the Saskatchewan Association of Architects provided matching seed funding,” he said.

Walker added a program of architecture in Saskatchewan would address a number of issues.

“Saskatchewan has the second lowest provincial ratio of resident architects per capita in Canada, at about 100 architects per million people, compared to the national average of over 400 per million,” Walker said. “There is, by this measure, a current shortage of about 300 architects in the province.”

There is also a nation-wide shortage of available spaces in architecture programs in Canada.

“There is a well-documented demand for architectural education in Canada and in Saskatchewan,” Walker said. “In recent years the number of applicants to schools of architecture nation-wide has exceeded the number of available spaces by a ratio of more than 10:1.

“Schools of architecture are often catalysts for creating a strong design culture in cities, which enhances urban quality of life and the creative economy,” he added.

I did come across that one. It shows some of the zoning.

This is the one I was looking for. Fourth from the top - Regional Future Growth Master Plan

It is from the Maps and Strategy link at the bottom of this page

Saskatoon eyes retail-heavy west side development

Alex MacPherson, Saskatoon StarPhoenix
Published on: January 26, 2016 | Last Updated: January 26, 2016 5:47 PM CST

Quote:
The City of Saskatoon is working with an American consultant to plan a new “retail power centre” on the city’s west side.

Blairmore Station — the name is tentative until approved by city council — will be situated south of Highway 14 and west of Wal-Mart’s Betts Avenue location. The development is part of the city’s forthcoming Growth Plan to Half a Million and is expected to support growing neighbourhoods such as Kensington and Elk Point, according to the city’s director of land.

“We’ve got probably upwards of another 30,000 to 40,000 people that could potentially live in this sector of the city someday, and what we need are some retail amenities to serve all those people down the road someday,” Frank Long said, noting that Blairmore Station is “in the very preliminary stages of concept planning” but could be similar in composition to the nearby Blairmore Suburban Centre.

While city staff have plenty of experience designing residential neighbourhoods with mixed-use areas, Blairmore Station’s high concentration of retail and commercial spaces and residential density meant it made sense to engage the Cincinnati, Ohio-based consulting firm Reztark Design Studios, according to Long.

Reztark Design Studio describes Blairmore Station as a “bustling self-contained neighbourhood.” Renderings published on its website show an elliptical design with residential buildings and big box stores flanking a central public square. Through a spokesman, Reztark referred a request for comment to the City of Saskatoon.

Long said the basic concept for Blairmore Station was conceived about two years ago, when the city’s annual population growth was about four per cent, but detailed planning and the pace of development will depend on demand.

It’s unlikely the city will release land within the next five years, but that could change if there is a “big uptick” in nearby residential growth, he added.

That's a distinctly un-Saskatoon design. While I still think the density neighbourhood wide is too low, it's an interesting design that looks to be taking the walkable/mixed use community seriously.

Very un-Saskatoon, indeed. It could make for a formidable western anchor for the city's east-west BRT line. If it's actually built this way and adheres to good design then there's some promise here. But I worry about any substantial amount of office space out here that could detract from downtown.

Too bad one of those retail pads doesn't have an IKEA logo on it.... yet.

Perusing city committee agendas, in the Municipal Planning Commission agenda, there's a report published detailing the different development applications received by City Hall.

The second entry under discretionary use applications is for a brew pub at 229 20th Street West, with 9 Mile Legacy Brewing behind it. Google Maps suggests that address is the vacant building between Spoke 'n Sport and the Mandarin:

This is more good news for the developing nightlife in Riversdale.

Bad news for BAM (Bridges Art Movement) that is currently in the space. It's a great little grassroots art space/venue, hopefully they find something nice in the area if the pub goes through.

The new River Landing plans are exciting. It's not really what I expected in a plan but the look is definitely something we haven't seen in downtown Saskatoon and fits in well with the Art Gallery and theatre next door.

Now if only they could make progress on River Centre II. Having two new buildings being built downtown kitty corner to each other. Haven't seen that in Saskatoon in a couple decades.

More Stores Coming

Dream's commercial development in N/W Holmwood (current site of Wilson's) has signed up Save On Foods, Motion Fitness and a new Keg Restaurant.

Also the development proposed for N/E corner of Hampton Village has expanded to include 4 buildings west of McClocklin Road

Triovest is the developer of River Centre II and is now involved with Riverlanding; therefore, I highly doubt this parcel will see anything done with it other than act as a construction staging area for the underground Parkade and hotel construction on Parcel Y.

Is the parkade under the hotel, condo or public plaza?
