I think its just the grey skies that make those photos of Regina & Edmonton look depressing. But then you see the new stadium & arena and it's anything but depressing.

Well, if they stuck a roof on her, and it will be roof-ready, I would bet she'll hold +++50,000 for a concert. As nice as she will be, it's still a crying shame that there will be no roof on her from the get-go.

Without factoring in the enormous additional costs - probably in the range of an additional $150 million - the operating costs of an enclosed domed stadium would be prohibitive - probably $10 - $20 million on an annual basis. That would certainly not be justified by the handful of concerts that would be held there given the local population of 250,000. Virtually all stadium tours are held in the summer when a domed facility is entirely unnecessary anyways.

Regina will be fine with new Mosaic as an occasional concert venue for the forseeable future. In 15-20 years, they will probably replace their old arena with a new 10,000+ facility. That in conjunction with a larger population should allow them to draw a considerably higher number of concerts than the present.

That's something to dream about. Saskatoon will likely be needing a new arena in a decade as well. Imagine a little Saskatchewan version of the Alberta arena battle. Only ours will be over who gets the 15,000 seating arena.

News on a potential new arena in Downtown Ottawa. The two leBreton Flats proposal, both of which include an NHL arena, will be revealed next Tuesday.

The Senators proposal includes an arena, a central library, indoor and outdoor space for preforming arts, retail, condos, hotels and a large gathering square (à la Maple Leaf Square I assume).

CBC today revealed details of DCDLS' bid which includes a 200,000 sqft Central Library to house both the Ottawa Public Library and national Archives, an underground NHL arena (two storeys above ground), an Automotive museum, a "Brewmuseum", sponsored my Molson, a YMCA, a grocery store (much needed in that part of Downtown) and a Botanical Garden.

And the kicker, Desmarais (of Power Corp) and Laliberté (Cirque du Soleil).

When it was revealed that DCDLS' bid included an arena (not included in the plan when they were short listed), Melnyk made it clear that the Sens are not for sale and the team would not move to an arena that isn't their own. But with the big names, who knows if they want to make an offer.

pffft I'll take 2 of whatever you're on. Modernization? yes.. but sasktel is more than what a city Saskatoons size needs and 3x what a WHL team needs. If anything they could probably shed some seats, to build a new arena to replace the existing one would be a reckless way to spend public dollars, it would be like Edmonton tearing down commonwealth in 1990. Didn't they just sink a ton of money into the place? new scoreboard, seats ect? I wouldn't hold your breath their bud. This isn't Atlanta



Even Regina would have a hard time claiming hardship on the Brandt centre. It's aged really gracefully and has seen ridiculous amounts of investments lately, the city is starting to outgrow it. I can see plans coming out of the wood works for a DT project in Regina in the next decade but It's not a dire need.



And just because I'm gonna throw in Moosejaws new(ish) Digs Mosiac place. have been in this building really cool place. surprising amount of loge seating and general premium seating

I was talking in terms of the stereotypes it was ironic. And likewise you could have spared us the pic. In terms of Cobourg it's a beautiful historic town an hour away from one the worlds great metropolises. I choose that one.

A few pictures my father took from inside Mile One Centre during the Ice Caps-Marlies warmup last weekend. Arena was full, but a large number of people didn't get to the game until near the 1st intermission. Beer lineups must have been long

Maybe a new arena in Regina will happen sooner- 10 years possibly? I'm sure the province will stagger new arena construction in Regina and Saskatoon by at least 10 years as the provincial government would be one of, if not the largest source of public funding.

Out of curiousity, what are some potential sites for new arenas (downtown) in Regina and Saskatoon in the future? Can someone point any particular places on city maps?

I doubt Regina will be building a new hockey arena anytime soon. The Brandt centre has recently been upgraded, and I believe the city will want to keep all the event space at the Agribition Grounds.

However, here is an old video, showing the original plan for the New Football Stadium on the site of the old CP Container Railyard. The problem was that CP didn't release as much land as was initially expected and needed for a stadium. So they had to scrap that idea. But there should be room for a hockey arena. It would be a great location connected to Casino and downtown.
