I'm not 100% sure if Halifax will be getting a full-fledged 300 000 + sq ft IKEA store. I believe they might build or convert an existing building somewhere in the city and have their much touted new format. I think they will be getting the smaller format opened in London, Ontario back in 2015. But don't hold your breath Moncton, we will not be getting a full-fledged store either, ever. I will say it again, you need a metro area of around 1 million to get a large format store. We don't have that anywhere east of Quebec, plain and simple.

Just a personal note, that format which is basically a pick-up centre is not very interesting, and the 20$ pick-up fee is a real turn-off unless you picking up a very large order like a brand new kitchen. It's better than nothing but... it's not the real IKEA experience Maritmers are yearning for.

So where would you expect IKEA to open the 10-12 full size stores it is planning to build in Canada in the next decade if one doesn't come to Halifax?

I don't know, we will know more very soon. I would love to see a full size store in Halifax, but I don't know if the numbers add up.
Maybe I'm just wrong, I'm not afraid of being wrong and I've been wrong before.

Looking at the Pop numbers (on Wiki admittedly), Halifax is 14th in the country for most population rankings. So if Ikea is aiming for 10-12 full sized stores in the next decade, Halifax would be a prime contender for it. (Especially since Ikea is already in most of the largest markets)

On the one hand, it's market size is probably smaller than Ikea might like; definitely at the low end. On the other hand, the closest store is 1000+km away, which means it is an untapped market. That could have nudged Hali higher on the Full Store list. (Especially if the Full store can eventually spin off and help support 1-5 Pickup stores in the rest of the Maritime cities)

Also, if you disregard the three CMAs without a full store that are in close proximity to the GTA (which means they have limited potential for catching much business from > 50 km away, and they're fairly close to existing stores), Halifax is the second largest CMA (behind Quebec City) without a store.

Edit: Looking at CMAs Halifax is 13th. CMAs are probably more relevant to this discussion that cities.

I think what he means is that if you're from NB, if you want IKEA furniture that you'll have to order it online and have it shipped to you.

In other words, he was making a joke.

Bur for me when I look at the overall health of the retail landscape here in Moncton i am a tad worried due to the volume of empty storefronts in Moncton, and Dieppe. for an example its been well over two years that that the lot at the corner of the TCH and Elmwood has gone untouched and that worries me. The stripmall that is next to the shoppers drug mart in Dieppe has little spots that are leased.

I think before some key retailers look into the city first we need to fill out all vacancies in town. But I am confident that todays IKEA announcement for Halifax may include a Moncton Pick up store. But stay put.

There's an article on l'Acadie Nouvelle this morning that relates how 3+ is disapointed that Halifax was chosen over Moncton, mostly based on Moncton's catchement area.

Source :
Quote:
Le choix est un peu surprenant puisque Moncton a le rayon d’achalandage le plus grand dans les Maritimes avec environ 1,5 million d’habitants à deux heures et demie de route, alors que ce chiffre est de 900 000 à Halifax.
The above has been discussed previously, but the article reveals some intersesting tidbits and speculation about possible upcoming projects.

First, Moncton's retail sector is valued at $2.7 billion annualy. 15 to 18 % higher than the national average. Apparently, retailers know this. This is all according to 3+ :

Quote:
The last part of the article writes of possible major project for the Trinity area and the rumours of Costco's move to a larger building. For the project :

Quote:
Translation : There are many rumours (about retailer development), but there is a major project that is presently being considered and that would greatly impact the Mapleton area. It (the project) is still at a preliminary stage, but if it were to be realized, it would be one of the largest in Atlantic Canada.

There are tons of empty storefronts in Halifax too. Especially downtown.

Good for the Maritimes in total, even if they don't announce any PickUp Stores.

I'm glad I was wrong! IKEA is coming to Halifax with a full size store! At 328 000 sq ft it's not too shabby, pretty decent actually. I'm pretty sure Moncton will be getting their smaller format in the future. Nonetheless, I expect to go to Halifax to shop at IKEA, but I won't be using the express location in Moncton, no use for that in our household. We will just go to Halifax to shop and browse the showroom. I was right on one front, up to recently IKEA admitted that they had a policy that they would only consider areas with 1 million people.

Excellent news for the whole Maritimes. I don't begrudge Halifax their IKEA store one bit. I think it was the natural choice.

I'm pretty confident that we'll see a pick-up IKEA store in the Moncton area sometime. Again, it would seem a natural fit. With a full IKEA store in Halifax, I actually think this improves our chances at having a pick-up store down the road.
