So 401 EB collectors will have 4 lanes through here? Odd how the WB collectors only have 2 just a little east of here, yet the WB 401 typically moves better than EB 401.
I guess squeezing in an extra lane on a 12+ lane highway isn't a huge cause for concern. No additional right of way is being required, and if construction is underway, you may as well kill two birds with one stone by rehabilitating and widening the road within one project.
I was under the assumption that any additional widening work on highways with more than 4 lanes in each direction also need a HOV lane built, but I guess the 401 is a special exception since building one would mean overpasses with support coulombs between the express and collector lanes would have to be rebuilt, not to mention the median separating collector/express would have to be moved/rebuilt.

I have a few ideas of where an additional lane to the 401 could be squeezed in and could really help traffic.
-EB express between the 400 exit and the basketweave exit. 4 WB express lanes were squeezed through the 400 interchange, and I think 4 EB lanes get under the structures too.
-EB between Dixon Road and express/collector split at 409. Widening to 6 lanes will allow 3 lanes to go to collectors instead of 2. This is a big choke point for the highway. The new collector lane would run to Weston Road where it becomes a dedicated exit lane. It could continue if the EB collector bridge over the Humber River is expanded/replaced.
-WB collectors between Yonge Street and Avenue Road. There are only 2 'through lane' collectors here. Cannibalizing the left shoulder can squeeze in an additional lane.
-3 WB exit lanes to 400. Not adding a through lane here, but would help minimize weaving for cars trying to get from the express lanes to the 400 via the basketweave. The third exit lane would become the default lane for the 400 SB connection. (For an example see my image of the 400/401 junction in SimCity 4 in an earlier post on this page or click
HERE.)
-EB express between 'the transfer' and Eglinton Avenue. This would be a tight squeeze and would cannibalize the left shoulder. Widening this from 4 to 5 lanes would give traffic more space to eventually merge under the 427 (4 lanes), and the new lane would be a dedicated exit at Elginton.
-Both directions between Brock Road and Westney Road. For now it would be a an auxiliary lane running between the on and off ramps, and later it could become a third collector lane if the Brock Road overpass is expanded or replaced.
