Yeah I get that and I don't hate it, just not super impressed by it (plus it was so stupidly over budget). Same with the Marriott Residence. It's nice but not blown away. Now Telus Sky on the other hand....

I think think the Allen Lambert Galleria will remain Santiago Calatravas Toronto masterpiece, rather than a footbridge used by transit commuters.

Ignore the troll and move on folks. Cold has been on a relentless path for attention for over a decade here, manipulating the truth while excessively over hyping reality. Cgy's competing with global cities for capital, talent etc, not edm. This is a decent project, now we need more heading west along the tracks.

I didn't see this post earlier, and if your argument is 'overpriced' then perhaps an argument can be made. If it's simply about how cool or interesting the bridge is, it's hard to argue that.

Ummm, no. There is nothing in Edmonton that competes with the NMC or Central library. I'm not sure what examples you had in mind, but don't bother to mention AGA or the Royal museum reno, because those aren't on par.

I think the JWMarrott in Edmonton and the Residence Inn Marriott in Calgary are both good fits for their respective cities.

It would be nice for Calgary to have the 'JW' added to the title, but I'm thankful we are not getting the design. Calgary already has enough grayish/blue glass towers to create an entire skyline in another city. I don't care if I ever see another one built here...unless it's really nice....ie, Telus Sky or Manulife.
I prefer to have the Residence Inn with it's orange and white pixels, as it's nice to have something different.

As for the JW going up in Edmonton, it's a good fit. Not a lot of newer glass towers up there, so this will balance out the skyline with some height and diversity and give also it a newer look.

Win-win for everybody

JW should be a really nice tower equal in quality to Manulife. Telus Sky is another level.

Personally, I'll always side with quality over different. For what it is, it's one of the better looking Residence Inns I've seen. The residential tower looks like crap though. The tower has a strange shape sitting on top of a really ugly podium. Luckily street level does look too bad.

I agree about quality over different, and while the JW Marriott might end up having quality materials, I'm unimpressed with its awkward looking design. It looks like something that belongs in Vegas. It won't equal 707-5th IMO.

I'm a big fan of 707-5th though. Personally, I think if it was a few hundred feet taller, it would rival pretty much any new tower in Canada.

Driving East on 9th the other day I saw what I think was the core of the second tower just starting to pop up.
