I used to eat there a lot. Great views of all the skyscrapers going up in the area.

$213 million for a 300,000 square foot mall expansion? Are they carpeting the mall with diamonds?

Visiting Miami from philly

Why are so many buildings here built with concrete instead of steel?

- Stronger and more rigid at heights than steel in high winds (hurricanes)
- Thermal mass
- Quicker to build and therefore occupy (remember that almost all new towers in Miami are residential condo/apt); Miami condos can go up a floor/day = $$$ sooner
- Can be cheaper - often don't need the tower crane
- Fireproof
- Overall safer than steel = lower insurance costs
- Soundproofing advantages (especially big consideration for giant residential towers with 24/7 noise)
- Miami condo towers are basically all the same building only with differing heights and sizes, and the little "architectural" finishing elements that they add on in attempt to distinguish them from every other building in the area
- Miami's skyline is all about ROI in as fast a manner as possible; to make as much cash as possible in before the bubble bursts or the feds catch on to your medicare fraud, Ukrainian arms dealing, or South Asian human slavery ring... the funds from which you are laundering via the construction of condo towers
