Gaultois (pronounced Gall-Tiss), near Francois (pronounced France-Way), on the South Coast of Newfoundland. One of a handful of proper outputs with no roads that remain.

Yeah, I know the right way to say it.

But I do recall once I shared a picture of Francois on SSP...

https://www.morganscloud.com/2012/09/12/francois-newfoundland/

...and explained how we say it. And someone (Acajack?) explained to me that in the 1600s, when this town would've been founded, Francois was actually pronounced France-way.

A lot of our French placenames are brutalized, though.

Baie Verte = Bay Vurt
Baie D'espoir = Bay Despair (exactly the opposite, lol)
Grand Bruit = Gran Britt
Grand Le Pierre = Gran Leper
Baie l'Argent = Bay Lar-Jint

And there are even really big ones.

Like Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America.

That's just how we pronounced Cap D'espoir. And now we spell it differently too.

Gorgeous, Hali. One from a friend on FB. The Victoria Street stairs, with the pink/white/green bandstand.

The name of this school always cracks me up. It's just too common an expression of surprise. It'd be like having a school named Jesus H. Christ or Sacred Heart of Jesus.

A little trip to the neighbourhood grocery for some breakfast and British snacks.

Don't judge me for driving. I did try walking, but the slush was over my shoes so I went back and got the car.

There are two groceries on the blocks around my house - Sobey's, and Coleman's, a local chain. Coleman's is more expensive, but I prefer them because they stock all sorts of local and British things I can't get at the mainland chains.

In nicer neighbourhoods, the Coleman's look just like any other grocery. In Rabbittown, though, it's of course a little poorer, cluttered, etc.

The aisles are all named after streets in the surrounding neighbourhood. And the floors are straight out of a Protestant church, lol.

Driving the block and a half back to my place down Merrymeeting Road.

And my haul! British Cadbury (chocolate is one of the few things where there is a HUGE difference in taste between the Canadian/American varities and the UK versions. It's much less sweet, much more wholesome-tasting over there). Dubliner cheese. And a few British Coke products (Vanilla, and Cherry).
