When is winter going to show up ?

My chillers were trying to start this afternoon. First time in five years I've had to raise the lockout temperature in December

Or November for that matter

Winterus Maximus - Fat-bike Chariot Race! - Feb 6, 2016

http://joinmade.org/winterus-maximus/

Think Roman Gladiator chariots meets chuckwagon racing meets dog sledding! As part of the Flying Canoë Volant Festival, MADE (Media Architecture Design Edmonton) is hosting a call for entries for custom-designed chariots to be built, assembled harnessed and pulled along by a pair of winter-ready fat-bikes to help re-think how Edmontonians experience winter!

MADE is looking for teams to design, build and assemble these chariots and then harness them to two fat-bikes. Teams can be of any size, but each racing team will be comprised of two fat-bike riders and one chariot pilot. Teams will race against each other for glory and prizes!

The race will be held on an outdoor course in La Cité Francophone as part of the Flying Canoë Festival on Saturday, February 6 2016. Have a chariot but no fat-bike? Or have a fat-bike but no chariot? No worries! Just let us know and we will endeavor to pair riders & pilots together! This race will also take place regardless of weather conditions or snowpack, so please be prepared!

Do you have a design and want to test it out? Our friends at the Deep Freeze Byzantine Winter Festival have set aside space for us near Alberta Avenue to test out your prototype on January 10th! This event will also give the public a sneak peek of what to expect before the big event at the Flying Canoë Festival.

The Call for entries opens: Thursday December 17th 2015

Please email your submissions, registration and/or questions to:

[email protected]

Entry Fee: $30/team payable on Eventbrite

Chariot Pilot trial: January 10th, Deep Freeze Winter Festival

Chariot Race Finale: February 6th, 7:00 pm Flying Canoe Festival

Victoria today for a skate, a freezeway and a tour of the new pavilion.

Freezeway is a great idea, but 400m was half or a third of what it needs to be and the quality of the ice was down due to use, a good problem to have. Can't wait to try it at night with the lanterns.

Pavilion is fantastic, also overflowing today, but generally about a perfect size.

Toboggan day tomorrow.

Warm clothes, grippy boots and patients. Make sure you get your on line ticket. Was there last night and they were turning people away that were hoping to buy tickets on site. Overall quite the site. could use some entertainment inside.

^ Agree; was there last night, it was very neat to see, but more entertainment options would be nice to see in the future: a hot beverage area, performers, ice carvings, live music, perhaps even a skating area (would need to be a bit bigger for that of course).

Chatted with one of the workers on how its made; very manual process, using just water, no scaffolds. It has some disadvantages, though, for example the worker in question was rebuilding a wall that someone had taken it upon themselves to demolish the previous day.

Overall though it was very cool, a great addition to our winter attractions!

Started XC skiing again this year after a long hiatus. Have been out after work a good half dozen times in the last few weeks. Loving Goldstick park, great terrain, nice amenities. So close to home. Capilano park loop is a good workout, very hilly, had a major crash coming down the big hill along the MU trail. Will wait till I get better to go back. riverside GC is neat at night since it's so dark and usually no one around.. Skiing amongst the coyotes.

Borrowed some gear from a friend and going to try Skijoring with the big dog this weekend over at Hermitage. That should be interesting

Deep Freeze was good.. Broke attendance record with about 25k showing up, but something was off this year. I think they need some fresh blood in there

Still one of the better winter festivals though overall
