I wonder how this building can go forward. I thought that the Austonion is only half full and thought it was not finished above a certain floor? Why would they want to build a structure this high and it potentially be left the half empty? Is this a different price point that should allow more to purchase?

I believe pre sales were sold out a few months after The Independent was announced.

I am excited to see what other projects come in the near future with the crazy success of The Independent in sales. It's got to be a boost of confidence for folks who have yet to announce ideas that they've got on the back burner.

Except for the heights they had listed. The Tower of the Americas isn't 750 feet tall, at least not to the roof. The antenna reaches that height, but the roof of the top house (where the observation deck and restaurant are) tops out at 622 feet. So of course their graphic showing all the structures was off because of that. They showed the roof of the TOA above those of The Austonian and Independent, when in reality both of those buildings' top floors are even higher than the roof of the TOA. TOA is 622 feet to the roof, while the 56th floor of the Austonian is at 635 feet, and the 58th floor of the Independent will be at 626 feet. And both of those buildings are 61 and 63 feet taller (respectively) than the TOA. For comparison, the height of the top house on the Tower of the Americas is 76 feet. Those heights for the TOA come from a booklet that I bought in the tower's gift shop about 10 years ag that showed all of the heights for the tower along with construction photos and original renderings.

Honestly the last I heard was that it was not built out above like 29th or something and the top 4 penthouses were still empty. I hope its not true but that is last I heard so please fill me in if otherwise.

I thought pre sales were just deposits to hold, can be refunded, so yeah if I had the money for a pre sale I would hold it and hope for the best. then if I can't I just get my money back. If people do that then they are not all pre sold unless everyone stays. just speculation. I don't know how these pre sales things work so inform me otherwise.

Not sure how long it will be out there, but there is an announcement about the Independent on the CTBUH site:

Here's most of it:

At least a few of the upper levels are definitely unfinished. I know because I was standing in them a few weeks ago. Unfinished dry wall, floors, etc. sitting empty. So you are a little more right than the other users are implying...

According to the Austonian's website, there are 9 units available (most look to be unfinished - that is, they are available for customization). This number does not include any resales which also may be unfinished or any available penthouses. Note that an unfinished unit does not necessarily mean that the unit is unsold...

It is not out of the ordinary to have "unfinished" units, especially in a luxury tower. A buyer who spends several million on a brand new unit may want to have the ability to customize his/her unit as they see fit.

*Now, can we stay on the topic of this thread - The Independent? The Austonian conversation should be moved to the Austonian's thread.

Thank you.
