I may have missed the news a while back, but does anyone know the story behind the parking garage rendered in this image? Is it part of the Cathedral's long term plans, something to do with the Hospital, or to allow for expansion of housing such as renovating the old St. Vincent's school?

Side bar: why is the site plan so awful - Why build a parking garage but maintain a huge surface lot on the street-frontage, wouldn't it be better to bring development to the edge of Waterloo? To me, this area has some of the best potential in the city outside of Uptown. It's within a few minutes walk of the business core, it has a hospital, community health centre, university building, small businesses, dog parks, Boy & Girls Club, etc., while being loser to grocery stores and the highway than either Uptown or the South End.

Old Kenta Hardware and Liquidation World Development?

I've noticed that the old Kent Hardware, Liquidation World location is undergoing renovations. Does anyone know why? I peeked in the door windows and they are partitioning the front section. Looks like it might be some kind of reception area? I've heard nothing about anyone leasing the property but hope it is put to good use soon.

I'm surprised none of you Saint Johner's posted this yet:

Major retail, commercial complex proposed for Ashburn Road and Highway 1
Saint John complex next to throughway on east side could include 500,000 sq. ft of buildings

At least they'll be in the city. It's an improvement over doing everything in KV.

People in the article are worried about traffic. God forbid the roads might be modified to accomodate this.

Traffic? It wouldn't be Saint John if a developer didn't want to build a shopping mall in an area already prone to flooding.

City should be pleased someone wants to commit more tax revenue to the City, if anything. Ashburn, and the terrible highway interchange at that location, should be heavily modified if this proposal goes through.

Uptown isn't convenient enough off the highway for your car, didn't you know?

It's an exciting idea for thong term future. But what I find odd is that when the article was first published it included a site plan. It was upside down compared to how we normally look at a map(north on the bottom) so it was a little confusing at first. But now the picture has been removed and I can't find a trace of it anywhere. And now the article sounds as though it's referring to a different location than what the original site plan showed. So I'm a little confused. You can see the original site plan in the photo of the woman with the hat but it's not clear enough to make it any details.

A low resolution version of the site plan for "The Crossing" retail development can be found on page 51 in the latest Saint John city council agenda packet. The developer's description for it can also be found in the packet.

The left hand side of that property is a pond overflowing the surrounding roads after a large rain. I don't know where that water is going to go once they would build up the property out of the swamp, certainly by that map there doesn't seem to be any surface facility for it.

Drury Cove would be to the north, no?

Edit: I assumed the site plan was properly oriented. You're right, that is Drury Cove.

I meant the left side of the highlighted development area, their buildings E, F, G.. It overflows Ashburn Road and Rothesay Road. And of course that water level is the reason the train underpass floods and stays flooded sometimes for days after a big storm. The boat dealer across the road from B (one of the two un-highlighted buildings on the Ashburn Road turn by Drury) has the parking lot flood - you need hip waders to get your trailer out of the right hand lot at times.

Adding to the list:
- The proposed Saint John Fieldhouse at exhibition park. (SJFieldhouse.com)
- $225,000 in solar lighting added to walking trail around Lily Lake (1.8KM trail)
-Eastside Mario's re-opening under new management
-St. Vincent Apartments Development (http://www.stvapartments.org/)

Also interesting possibilities:
-Atlantic Potash Corp. (http://apcpotash.com/news/)
-Potash Corp plans to expand Courtney Bay terminal access with new entrance road off of the causeway - parallel with train tracks.
-There was talk of expansion at the Regional Hospital: a new building for clinics/offices, restaurant, short-term accommodation for patient's families, etc. - but I haven't heard any mention of that in over a year.
